Saunders contradicting self

Published

Have anyone of you gone over some questions on the saunders 4th ed cd? some of the questions there are erroneous and would contradict what the saunders comprehensive books says. Whats bugging me is that the answers are so thorough and it is accompanied by a strategy on how to answer the question, it confused me even more.

anyway, i might be wrong, but i did some researching and obviously saunders is wrong.

the question can be found on study mode->content->adult health->endocrine question number 69.

the question is claiming that in cushing's disease, you would see hyperkalemia.

im scared.

whew i thought i was alone. hehehe. What was saunders thinking? especially a rationale and a strategy was made. maybe she got too tired writing that thick book :chuckle

some of the lab values in the book is inconsistent. On the earlier chapters (lab values) normal values are provided. But when you progress to different systems, the normal values would 'change'. :banghead:

anyway thanks for the tips. heres my way of memorizing the electrolyte changes in addison's and cushing's

Some People Get Cold (S= sodium, P= Potassium, G= Glucose, C= Calcium)

U=Up or increased/hyper

D= Down or decreased/hypo

In cushing's

Some People Get Cold

U......D........U....D

In Addison's (its exactly the opposite of cushing's)

Some People Get Cold

D......U........D....U

:)

Nice Tip. Thanks for the info.

you have a keen eye and mind Lorodz. that is a good sign that your studies are sinking in....i think you will pass your upcoming nclex...i entirely depended on saunders on my1st and i also noticed inconsistencies. i brushed it off.....then i failed my 1st. i think saunders is good for content only .....and kaplan for Questions strategy......i have yet to prove this conclusion coz i will be doing this soon. if there is one positive thing that resulted in my failing my 1st attempt. i think it is the humility i have now in my heart. i think failing my 1st served its purpose.

good luck to us both on our nclex rn exams :typing

I can't agree with you more ira! I think the people who fail once or even several times become invested in nursing even more than they already were and more determined than ever. I also think those people will work harder to keep that license because it was such a struggle to get in the first place...I know when I received my license I will treasure it and hold it close to my heart because of all the work I've done trying to pass the NCLEX-RN. :redpinkhe :nurse:

i noticed this too.. it's about the NPH time, i've notice the peak time.. and i was laughing coz the random questions they are just 2 questions apart.. and i was confuse.....so i have to look at there book and again they are all not the same..ehehe..well it's still a good book..

...I think I found Another inconsistancy ??

I found one - or am I wrong ?

On the CD it says after a lumbar puncture for the first hour, the patient should be prone with a pillow under their stomach. I made sure I wasnt hallucinating and checked the book, and sure enough the book doesnt mention a word about prone position. I always thought it was supine for like 8 hrs? Can someone make me feel better PLEASSSEE ;)

I guess Im just scared , what if we see a question on the nclex, and get it wrong because I get confused :smackingf

I think you are right as far as the client having to lie supine for 8 hours. On this site, it states the following (scroll down to after procedure):

"You will be asked to lie flat for up to eight hours after the lumbar puncture is completed. This helps reduce the incidence of a headache. You will be allowed to roll from side to side as long as your head is not elevated. You may be asked to urinate in a bedpan during the time that you are required to stay flat. You will be asked to drink additional fluids to rehydrate after the procedure. This replaces the CSF that was withdrawn during the spinal tap and reduces the chance of developing a headache."
