SANE training

Hello everyone,
Just wanted to say that I came back from a SANE training in Atlanta and it was wonderful. I'm now on my way to becoming a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner(SANE). If this is something that you want to do, go for it!

Hello, I am relocating to the Atlanta area and wanting some info on your class you went to and if any of the hospitals there hire SANE nurses or do you have to work strictly in the ER to be one???

amoymak-- There is an on-line SANE program at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. They require only 2 onsite meetings. It starts in April 2005. You can go to Quinnipiac.edu to find out more.

You can do a Master's Program in Forensic Nursing, or if you have a Master's degree in Nursing already you can do a certificate program in Forensic Nursing (I think that is how it works for the certificate programs:) SANE nurse training is 40 hours and then a checklist to complete- like pelvic exams, touring a ED exam room, and quite a few other things. Make sure when you are going to take a SANE course that they either suggest where to go to do the pelvic exams or you know a practicioner that will let you do them- it seems to be a big barrier to completing the checklist...

The difference between a SANE nurse and a Forensic Nurse.... Masters programs in Forensic Nursing prepare nurses to be clinical specialists- much more broad than the 40 hour + SANE training. I know in my program they suggested we take the SANE program- I beleive that they now require it. Forensic Nursing is really any part of medicine/nursing and the law- so collection of evidence, reviewing medical records to determine if the standard of care has been breached, SANE nurses, nurse coroners, there are many areas that it can be applied... But actually finding a job is another story, anyone had any luck? Please let me know!

greetings to all of the SANE nurses on this board! I have been a SANE since 1998, and have just currently been on the grounds up development of a new SANE program in our county. We completed training on 17 RN's in September, and have recruited one other SANE (other than myself) who has moved to our area from another county.

Our program is really moving fast! We have a serial rapist in our county and he has made our lives interesting to say the least. I did a perp exam on him yesterday (we think/hope it was him. ) keeping our fingers crossed!

There is a need for male SANE nurese. Women are not the only people who are raped. It happens to men too.. This is especially true in corrections.

This is sadly true but most men who are raped, are raped by another male so most of them feel more comfortable having a woman examine them.

Hello Fellow SANE's! I'm new to this board. So nice to meet everyone:-) I work in a large city hospital with about 25 SANE'S. I joined the hospital almost a year ago. Just since January, I've lost track of how many cases I've had. We've been really busy! As to the male nurses joining us, I think that's a great idea. We do see jail inmates and also do suspect exams twice a week. For anyone considering this field, the only thing is don't count on it as a primary source of income, unless you also work staff in the ER or elsewhere. We all have other income sources. Most work part time at other jobs. If anyone has any questions, I'm happy to answer them. Just send a PM.

I'm in a RN program now and would like to do forensic nursing. I have heard of SANE here at my local hospital. I would like info on how to become a SANE nurse.

Are you on call at all times to be a SANE or only at certains times? It easy to balance working a part/full time job and also have to come in to do your SANE position?

I am not a nursing student even, but I sat through a seminar one day for extra credit. It litterally broke my heart. A lot of what I heard/saw was about children who have gone through it. I know it would be so traumatic as an adult, but for a child. I went home and cried. I didnt even eat anything the rest of that day.

I have so much respect for those of you who do the job you do. I just dont think I could.

Hi everyone,

I am new to this site. I have been doing some research on forensic nursing, and find it quite interesting. Does anyone know the requirements for the State of NJ? I was looking at the on-line program from Kaplan but I'm not sure if the certificate will qualify for the requirements for the state. Any in-put would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day!
