Reciprocity question!
i know that, but as i said in my second post, my att already came in and you cannot change the state board to be licensed under once your att had been sent. i was planning on staying home for a while and saving money but i have no job and by the time i called the nys hospital, i had my att.

Reciprocity question!
not a dumb question at all! i was planning on taking them in ny but everyone convinced me to stay home and save money and work in boston. i interviewed with the nurse manager i had my internship with in boston but they needed nurses asap so i didn't get the job. i called the recruiter back and she told me to look online for other positions so i could then interview with her (backwards, i know lol). i called her back a few times and emailed her and got nothing. i finally called one last time and turns out she didn't even work at the hospital anymore. so i got the number for the new recruiter at the boston hospital and she said all the positions for new grads had been filled and my name was never passed on. this was the end of june. i was so bummed... and slightly pissed! in boston the positions fill up in late may early june because there was a shortage of new grad positions because there is a shortage of staff who can take on new grads... it's a vicious cycle. but i called every hospital a few times and the recruiters either told me the positions were filled or they never called back. so i decided to go for it and call a nyc hospital and he called me back in 15 mins! and the state board of nursing in ny emailed me back in 10... i never got a call back from the ma state board of nursing (good thing my question was already answered!) by the time i set up a meeting with the nyc hospital, i had gotten my att so it was too late to switch the state board in which i would be licensed under. thank god this hospital is "new grad friendly" and he said they are always taking on new grads! long story, but there it is lol thanks for all your help everyone, i really appreciate it :)

Reciprocity question!
i just passed my boards!!!!!!! i live in mass and i am going to start the paperwork for my reciprocity in ny. i hear so many different things and i'm hoping there's someone here with recent experience with this. some people are telling me all i have to do it pay to have my license in two states, some people say certain states make you retake the boards depending on what state you came from. i met with a recruiter from a nyc hospital and he spoke of paperwork but nothing about another nclex exam... what's the deal?! just the paperwork? i know i muct also have the infection control and child abuse training; but besides that, anything? thanks a ton! kaite

My crazy dilemma!
hi everyone! i'm a new grad, have yet to take my boards and i have no job lined up. this is a long story, but i do want to get it all out lol. forgive me for any typos, i'm kind of in a rush!! lol i was in contact with hr at one big hospital in boston and things were going ok. then she stopped returning my phone calls and didn't email me back. i called once more only to find out she didn't work at the hospital anymore, so i talked with the new recruiter and, of course, there are no new grad positions left. i was so crushed bc it's the one place i really wanted to work. so i started checking up on other resumes i had put out at other large hospitals and other jobs i had applied for and nothing. either all full or no one has returned my calls. i'm feeling very upset, distressed, pissed, and scared about this because i do not want to work at a small local hospital. they do not have new grad programs and aren't teaching hospitals and i do not like the local hospitals. i work at a nursing home right now and i do not want to work there either, none of the nurses want me to come back either because i am the only one there with my bsn and they want me to get experience at a large hospital, which i agree with. i have always wanted to move out of state but was worried about doing so, and so i filled out my nclex application for a massachusetts license. i decided to give it a try and called a hospital in nyc and to my surprise, the man called back in 15 mins!!!! i'm used to waiting a day or two before i call them back and leave another message. i don't have a job interview lined up right now, but i am going to the hospital to meet with him, get a tour and ask questions. he did ask whether or not i would get my license in ny or ma and i told him ma and then i would get reciprocity. he said that could take up to 3 or 4 months and if i were serious about moving, i should try and change it so my license would be in ny. i am very serious about moving, i've always wanted to live in nyc, but chickened out when filling out my nclex application (stupid me!). i called and found out that because i already got my att, i cannot change it to ny. another hurtful blow. so that's my story and here are my questions i've looked online and i can't find any information about how to go about getting reciprocity in another state and no one was in any of the offices at the mass board of nursing (i feel like everyone in ma is on vacation right now). does anyone know how to go about getting reciprocity in ny and how long it will take (i know he said 3-4 months, but i was wondering if anyone else had a different experience). i'm going to talk to people in hr when i go, but i think they accept new grads all the time, bc he said they had an oricentation once per month (does anyone work at mount sinai hospital????) but does anyone have any clue what i shoudl do in the meantime?? i don't want to have my ma license for 3 months while i wait for reciprocity and then not get a job in ny. i also don't want to start working someplace only to leave after 3 months. i was thinking of working at my nursing home until then, but the staff isn't too keen on new grad nurses. i'm just worried i won't get a job in ny, then get screwed in ma bc no new grad positions are open. i really want to move to nyc though. i'm calling other hospitals in as well and i think i'm going to call hr tomorrow at mt. sinai and expina my dilemma. maybe i can work as an aide until my reciprocity is completed? i'm so stressed right now and i still have the boards to study for! sorry for the long story, but if anyone can help i'd greatly appreciate it.

Need some help!
that is interesting to know, thank you. i wasn't aware that the cns role was more of an educator. it's funny, i want to do some international nurisng now (i don't think i want to make a career out of it) and do some education in that country, but i don't want to be a nurse educator at all! lol. teaching isn't my thing, i def do not want to be a nurse educator at a college. i did have my own class while i was in school... def not my thing haha! but the idea of teaching hiv/aids education in another country is appealing to me. i know, it doesn't make sense to me either! i want to be on the floor, i'm not one for a desk job (that's why i chose nursing) so i guess a cns isn't my thing either. thanks for all the help!

Need some help!
i know that i do not want an np program either. i was thinking that was the only next step i could take and was discouraged about going back to school to get my masters. i have my own reasons for not wanting my np, so when i found this i was excited. i would still be getting my masters through george mason university, not oversees. thanks for your input, i was thinking it could be a general masters degree as well. i do eventually want my cns, but in what i don't know. right now i'm looking into a med/surg position, but i'd love to work with the hiv/aids population and the ed has always interested me as well. there are too many options with nursing!!! lol thanks again kaite

Peace Corps and Grad School Help (not sure where to post this)
i just graduated from a bsn program, have yet to take the boards though. i have so many ideas of what i'd like to do running through my head, but i have no clue yet! lol anywho, i always wanted to do some work internationally, i'm interested in working with those with hiv/aids. i finally found something that i think will click with me. it's the master's international program at george mason university which is a program between george mason university and the peace corps and i can do one year of class at george mason, then i can work with the peace corps for two years. the program they offer is an advanced clinical nursing track. my main question is: what exactly is an advanced clinical nurse????? it's not considered an np, correct? is it considered a cns? i know i shouldn't go for a program that i have no clue what exactly it is lol, but i'm not planning on going now, so i thought you guys could help me with the research process. i hope i'm in the right forum. is there anyone who is an advanced clinical nurse that can explain what you do and what exactly you would be considered once you graduate? where would i be able to work with this degree? i know it's considered a masters program. has anyone else done this program or one similar to it?? i am hoping this is the right fit for me. i can do the internation work i've been wanting to do, hoepfully get to work with the population i'd like and end up with my masters. thanks for any help and feel free to move this post to a thread that will most benefit me. this is a link to the program: http://chhs.gmu.edu/nsg/msn-advancedclinical.html thanks again!!!! kaite

worst clinical story please??
I had been a CNA while in nursing school (I just graduated, but have yet to take the boards!) so it takes a lot to gross me out. Well I gave my first fleets in my med/surg clinical and then helped the pt onto the commode. I was walking behind him to get something when he leaned forward on the commode and had a BM... he sprayed everything all over me! I just kind of stood there for a moment, I didn't want to let the pt know he had done it, so when the nurse took over with him, I quickly left the room and changed my pants and washed up. Thank God I was in a setting that had hospital pants for the staff (the nursing home where I work doesn't). I wasn't as grossed out as other people were around me, but I felt like I smelled all day! I threw those pants out!

AIDS Certified Registered Nurse
Thanks for the links, but I am still looking for information on courses. That wesbite is just saying how to take the test. I need a class first lol. I was wondering if there were courses specifically for this field and where I could find one. Thanks

AIDS Certified Registered Nurse
Hi I was looking into becoming an AIDS Certified Registered Nurse eventually, I'm graduating my RN program in May. I was looking at other career paths as well, but I always come back to working with HIV positive patients, I'm especially interested in working in an outpatient clinic setting or with HIV+ moms. I cannot find any information about how I become certified, what courses need to be taken, what schools offer the program, whether or not it is a masters program...help! lol If there are any AIDS Certified Registered Nurses out there, I could def use some helpful info. Also, if you are working as an AIDs certified registered nurse, have you traveled and worked with HIV+ mothers? I would love to do that as well, but would I need additional training for that? Thanks to any help I can get. Kaite World AIDS Day-This fri Dec 1st. Wear a Red Ribbon!!!

SANE training
Are you on call at all times to be a SANE or only at certains times? It easy to balance working a part/full time job and also have to come in to do your SANE position?

Update Thread for New Grads Looking for Jobs in MA
I'm in school at Umass Amherst now hoping for a position in Boston. I would love to be able to work in an ED, although seems highly unlikely. I'll probably end up doing med/surg bc I plan on going to grad school in Fall of '08. I just hope it's not this hard for me either. Good luck and hope you hear soon!

Update Thread for New Grads Looking for Jobs in MA
Reading this post is somewhat scaring me!! A lot of the students in my program were offered jobs in their internship before they even graduated. And their jobs are being held until they pass the NCLEX. I haven't heard of anyone I know who graduated from a nursing program having such a difficult time. What field are you pursuing?

Job differences, online courses and more fun!
Thanks for all the info I do have another question (I warned you! LOL) that I came upon as I was doing some research. I know some job descriptions I've read that are looking for forensic nurses just want an RN and they would be trained in the forensic portion once given the position. I have heard of people being both a nurse and a cop or nurse and a lawyer. My question is, I have found a program that I find ot be very interesting. It is a masters in forensic science at the university of colorado. It is unrelated to nursing, although they do have a certificate/subspecialty in forensic nursing if you go for a general clinical nurse specialist degree. I would love to be able to work in an ED using skills I have learned in a masters of forensic science major but also to be able to work at crime scenes. I love the idea of both and thought that maybe it would be easier for me to find positions in both using this strategy. Of course I def do understand experience and networking is important (thanks for the networking tidbit, I will get myself into as many organizations as possible lol !!!), but I thought if I want to be able to combine both nursing and death/crime scene investigating this would be an option. I feel that I am losing my love for nursing bc school is becoming so stressful, but I don't want to completely run away from the idea of nursing bc I know its bc I'm so stressed and not bc I don't want to be a nurse anymore (I don't know if anyone else in nursing school felt that way, but I sure do!). I've always wanted to do stuff at crime scenes, be a cop, that kind of stuff on top of my love for the medical profession. I started out wanting to go pre-med, but realized that nurses have a more hollistic approach to medicine which is what I am in love with! I thought a nursing degree ontop of a masters in forensic science would be the best of both worlds. Maybe it's never been done, maybe I'm living in a dream world and hoping for a dream job that may just not exist, but I do realize how difficult it is and that it's nothing like CSI, but I do still have my dreams of helping people in bad situations from a nursing/hollistic point of view. I also have a questin about shadowing an ME. When do you recommend that to be done? How do I go about doing that? I think that would be really awesome as well. That's another thing I wanted to if I did go on to medschool. I know, I want to do a lot! I'm also very intersted in international nursing working with HIV positive moms (I know, completely out of left field lol). Thanks for listening to (or reading) my rambling!!! Best wishes and good luck to anyone trying to get into this field!! Kaite:nurse:
