San jacinto college adn fall 2010

Hi everyone. Im wondering if any of you are planning on applying to San Jac ADN program or are in the program? Also, when applying will you be using option A, B or both? Lets talk about it here. :redbeathe

Yep, science and medical based textbooks have always been pricey. I imagine that textbooks are even more expensive for med school and law school.

You are broke eitherways!

hey everyone....there are a lot of books to buy for the 1st semester but you use them the whole program. I'm going to lay it out for you to save you some money that I wish I had saved. Theres going to be a list of books you will have to buy and Im going to tell you which ones you need the 1st 8 weeks and which ones you need the second 8 weeks. ( each semester is split into 8 weeks).

1st 8 Weeks:

Health Assessment book with workbook ( you can buy used but you need your own workbook and they come as a package in the bookstore)

Fundamentals of nursing: you cannot buy this used because you need my nursing lab code and the used ones usually have the code already registered and then you have to pay an additional 75 to buy the code.

Math for Meds Book and Medical Terminology book.

Also the APA book....never used it, its to write papers in APA stype but they tell you how to do it in orientation the 1st day of class and then you can google it so its a waste of money to me.

2nd 8 weeks:

All of the clincial book: Diagnostic lab handbook, drug book, nursing diagnosis handbook. They have a medical dictionary listed but I NEVER used it not even once. If you dont know a test just google it. This book is big and useless to me. It comes in a package with the Med Term book so try and order the med term book on its own. Its up to you though what u want to buy.

I hope that helps. They may tell you that you need all of these books the 1st 8 weeks but you really dont. If you want to make clinical easy on yourself save the money for 2nd 8 weeks and go and buy your Med Surg book with the 2nd 8 weeks books cuz you will definately need that book for your care plans.

The lab pack: you can buy your own stethoscop and pen light but thats it you have to buy everything else from them. San Jac has two uniforms one for school and one for clinical and they are strict on that. Even if you do not buy the stethoscop from them you are still looking at well over 300 dollars on the 1st day of orientation. The most expensive part of the program is the books but after the 1st semester you kind of learn what to buy and what not to buy and then you already have all the books you need. Hope I answered all of your questions.

@PharmLUV: Thx for the heads up about the textbooks. So the transition lab kit is for people who already have a stethoscope and pen light? Would you recommend getting a Littman brand? Thanks.

I'm not sure about the packages I dont remember what they had in them. I do recommend the Littmann but I would go with the Classic...I have the Lightweight and it really is light but sometimes its really hard to hear breath sounds and the apical pulse and what not. Its up to you though. The lab pack has all of your IV bags, IV start kits, foley catheters, insulin vials, syringes, gloves, yada yada.

@PharmLUV: Appreciate all your input!!!!

Thanks PharmLUv I appreciate the info as far as the text books for the girl working across the street thanks for the info that tells me you guys are cheaper price, the price I got was from the school book store, I'll go check it out with you guys first.
