San Jacinto College ADN Fall 2009

Published

Hi everyone. Im wondering if any of you are planning on applying to San Jac ADN program or are in the program?

Lets talk about it here

Does anyone know if we have to buy ALL those lab packs listed on the form she emailed us? The transition lab supply, basic lab supply kits, lap supply kits w/littman lightweight, and lab supply kits with littman classic?

Also, how many nursing uniforms are we buying? and what are the different kinds? i'm just not understanding fully what she typed up on this sheet...ha ha. thanks if anyone can help!!

Since I seem to spend every waking second on my computer, I'll help out again : )

I think that all that lab stuff is going to be needed eventually (keyword being eventually). I'm not going to buy it if it's not mandatory to buy it, only because I got most of my supplies for cheaper than what they're charging. I think at orientation, this will be explained. That, or one of the nursing people who's in the program will drop by and explain it more throughly than I can.

As for the on-campus uniforms, you have to buy 2 non-negotiable. The other pack of uniforms comes with 2 in the 130 dollars that you pay for it. You have to buy both of those I'm thinking.

Like I said, hopefully one of the people that's in the program will stop by and let us know for sure what's up.

Almost forgot! I saw on the news today something extremely fascinating (at least, to those of us in A&P 2. You others might like it as well, it's just more relevant to those in the class).

Apparently, scientists have created sperm from stem cells. This is amazing, and really reinforces the fact that my biology instructor was right! It obviously doesn't sound like much at first, but one has to realize that it's just the beginning of the possibilities. First it's sperm, what next? Neurons? Hepatocytes? I shudder with giddiness to think of what's around the corner.

Yes. Shudder with giddiness.

Shaynalynn- Congratulations on your acceptance! I know you are bursting with excitement like the rest of us, and you should be, it is definitely something to be proud of.

For the Hep B, as long as you've had all 3 shots and a clear titer, then you should be fine. Do you have a recent titer showing your Hep B antibody count? I looked back on the physical, and I didn't see a time frame, but I have read in many situations that the count can drop over the years if you had it done a long time ago, and therefore you'd end up needing a booster. You still have time if that's the case. The acceptance letter said as long as you have it in progress by July 27th you'll be ok.

On the Lab kits, I was so hoping that they are just giving us a choice between the "basic kit", "the Littman Lightweight II", and the " Littman Classic II". I wouldn't think we'd be expected to buy all 3 of those. I think the Lab supply is seperate from the kits though. I was planning to bring about $700.00, but I'm hoping to leave with some left over. LOL!

As for whether it's mandatory...I assumed "yes". It's in bold print, and underlined on the acceptance info: "Nursing uniforms, Lab pack, and photo identification badge must be purchased by all nursing students during orientation". Also, I heard that we had to purchase at time of orientation. The paper I have shows the insurance being $7, but this is a paper I picked up from the nursing dpt. last year, so I'm not sure if it has gone up. Maybe they'll be nice and give everyone the option to find stuff for cheaper like "Flydayton" was saying.

Flydayton- I know it sounds cool about the discovery of making sperm cells from stem cells, and it is a discovery that so many have been wishing for, but to me, it seems like a bitter sweet. I am afraid that after such a discovery that science will run with this, with very little limits. I am a traditionalists who firmly believes in the values of nature, and though nature sometimes brings about sadness that we wish we could correct through stem cell reproduction...I just don't think its our job to try and fix everything, and I definitely don't think that our nation is equiped to handle that power. If laws are established to control the use of this knowledge, even though the past has proven that laws don't mean jack sometimes. I pray that it will be used only in detrimental situations such as reproducing organs to save lives, or help with diseases such as alzheimer's and parkinsons. Even at that part of my heart says that we are interfering with the natural course. Sorry... I know that was a long winded opinion, but I had an A&P professor that brought that up when I was taking his class, and he was so excited about how far science was coming with this and we ended up getting into a debate about it. By chance is your professor Dr. Marvdashti?

Thank you so much for all your help!!

i'm so excited, yet i'm nervous at the same time.

i might be more nervous than excited :-\

and we don't get any breaks?? wow. that sucks!

what CPR class are you taking? I wonder if that's any hard..

I'm taking the 2nd one..july 25th..

I was sooooo fortunate...I actuall took my CPR class in fall of last year. Originally I was planning to apply into the LVN program at South Campus, because I really didn't think I had a shot at getting into the RN program, at least not the first time. However, different situations kept coming up that made that option difficult, and finally I rested on the conclusion that God did not want me to go that way. So I backed off, regained my patience and waited to apply for RN, and Thank God, I made it!

I am nervous too. I have 3 children 8, 6, and 3 and I know how hard it has been taking all my other courses with kids and very very little help...not easy. But here I am 31 hrs into it, and looking back thinking "How?" I am totally convinced that without my faith, I never would have made it. I am so excited to not only get this chance, but to be able to show my kids that anything is possible if its truly your dream. Sounds like a Disney song huh? LOL! Right now, I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how I'm going to pay for childcare, cause I know I'll need it this time, but again I had to take a few deep breaths and tell myself "it will all work out".

I'm excited to meet all of y'all. I know I'm quite a bit older than most of you, but I think that when it comes to the nursing program, we're all going to have a lot in common, and I don't think age will be a factor. At least I hope not, cause I know I'm going to need y'alls help.

you're lucky you already took your CPR! :)

and yes, you will do fine with all three of your kids! i promise:)

it will definitely be a handful, but just pray and of course i will pray for you

and everything will work out the way it's planned!

and yes, everyone will need everyone's help..haha.

i've never been to the health science building or wherever our

orientation is.. where is it even located? dumb question,i know!

and should we get there early??

If you are facing the college from Spencer Hwy, you will go down the left side of the school. It is that first building seperate from the rest of the college. It has its own seperate parking lot. I believe it does say Health Science on the outside of the building.

Thank you for your encouragement. I can never get enough of that.

And no questions are stupid. I think sometimes during an exciting moment, our brain partially shuts off, then once the excitement dies down, we start thinking normal again. WE'RE ALL WITH YA!

You are so old!!! I do not think I can hang out with you.;)

Has anyone had their picture taken? If so, where did you get it done? I finished my shots and physical today....now for the picture.

Congratulations everyone on making it this far!

I am currently in the ADN program at San Jac due to graduate May 2010. I saw you had questions about the lab packs and such so I figured I answer them for you. Each lab pack contains the same items which you will use in your Fundamentals and skills class the entire first semester. It also has materials that can be useful to you in the clinical setting, like penlight and scissors (FYI learn that a good nurse always has these with him/her). The only difference is the type of stethoscope that you purchase. It really is a matter of personal choice. I have the Littman Lightweight II S.E. and it has been good to me. I think it was the middle price range one. It was recommended to me by the previous class so I took their advice.

The school uniforms were about $25 each set. You are required to purchase at least two of these. It's really not a big deal to get more than two. After the first 8 week session you are only on campus for 2-3 days. The school uniform is basically a royal blue scrub set with the school's name and logo on it.

You are required to purchase two clinical uniforms which are more than enough to get you through the program. The clinical uniform consists of a royal blue scrub pant and a white "nursing" top. I don't know how to explain it but some people call them "marshmallow" shirts.

Liability insurance is charged when you pay your tuition for the semester. The cost since I have been in the program has been $7.

If you have anymore questions please don't hesitate to ask. I look forward to meeting some of you at orientation!

The photo that we need to bring..can't it just be a regular picture of us?

like can't we print it off the computer??

Negatory. The picture has to be like a standard photo. I believe it says on the paper that you can't print it. I don't think anybody really knows what devilish purpose they have for these photos.
