San Francisco State University (SFSU) Entry Level Master of Science in Nursing (ELM) Fall 2024

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi! I wanted to start a thread for SFSU ELMSN applicants for fall of 2024. I'm actually a current student who began the program in fall 2023 and wanted to provide a place to answer any questions applicants might have about the program. Our application cycle didn't have any connection to those further along in the program than us when we applied, which made it difficult to find information. So please reach out with any questions, concerns, or to connect with other applicants!

Does everyone get the the provisional financial aid email?

Yes. I think everyone who filled out the FAFSA will receive a financial aid email. I got one, but have not heard back from the nursing department regarding getting off the waitlist.

Has anyone heard back?

I got off the waitlist today for Pediatrics and just wanted to update you guys!

I was notified by email!

is there a facebook group for this cohort yet?

Why were people kicked out for working as a nurse after second year? I'm confused. I really want to accept my offer (well I did, but I might still back out) because I don't think I can do 3 years of no work. That is just crazy to think they expect that from us.

They tell us we can't. They don't award us our BSN until after our 3rd year, at the same time as our MSN. So if we pass the NCLEX we will be RNs but not have a degree. A lot of places won't even hire you without your actual degree. We heard through the grapevine that students lied about already having their BSN when they got nursing jobs their 3rd year and that contributed to them getting kicked out. But I don't know the full story. We spoke to a level 6 ELM student (someone in their last semester during 3rd year) and they said there is no time to work as an RN even if you wanted to/could. I agree that 3 years without work is a crazy expectation. Many of us work part time in other fields to support ourselves.

Can I get some info on what the class schedule and clinical schedule is like for the first year? I am currently looking for a place to live and wanted to see if commuting from San Jose is a doable option.

How many days a week is class in SF and are they consecutive classes or are there big gaps in between them? Additionally, do they place clinicals out in the San Jose area?

Any info would be super helpful as I have been unable to connect with anyone from the previous cohorts.
