San Francisco State University (SFSU) Entry Level Master of Science in Nursing (ELM) - Fall 2024

Published

Hi! I wanted to start a thread for SFSU ELMSN applicants for fall of 2024. I'm actually a current student who began the program in fall 2023 and wanted to provide a place to answer any questions applicants might have about the program. Our application cycle didn't have any connection to those further along in the program than us when we applied, which made it difficult to find information. So please reach out with any questions, concerns, or to connect with other applicants!

what specialty? also when you accept is there a portal to accept or an excel sheet?

my bad I didn't put it into question form so probably didn't ask correctly, I was reading responses on this posting that mentioned there was no interview last year, was wondering the process for this year would be the same?

I got in for nursing administration — there was a Google doc that I inserted more info into and then confirmed my acceptance once again

Congrats on your acceptance 🙂 you should be able to switch specialties without issue. It won't affect your coursework until your 3rd year so no need to fret about it immediately. There are no interviews.

thank u! and thanks for the kind response, I mentioned wanting to change my specialty after my application on reddit and someone mentioned that people were on waitlists for certain specialties and attempted to make me feel bad about wanting to change specialties

so I just wanted to see if it was OK 😭

LOL I found that Reddit post and commented on it backing you up and now it's gone

Last year's wait list was by specialty. Two people in my program were both #4 for their different specialties. So it seems like it's the same this year.

It varies. Last semester we were on campus like 3 days a week. This semester is maybe 2, sometimes none.

Hi Sarah,

Do you remember what the specialities were that your friends on #4 were for? And how long did it take them to find out they got off waitlist?

I don't remember. And people were getting off the waitlist up until the day before the program started (mid August)

Hi Sarah!!

Quick question: do they tell what to enroll in or do we follow the roadmap?

Thank you!

Yes you follow the road map but there is a coordinator who emails the specifics about which sections to register for each semester.

hey Sarah!

do you know if you're able to do any study abroad within the 3 years you're in the program?

Hi Sema, there is no option to study abroad. The courses all require you to be on campus at SFSU and all clinicals are located in the Bay Area.

Hi Sarah!
I wanted to know what is the ELM learning like. Do you feel like you receive enough support from your professors and classmates? What about lectures and labs? Is the material gone over thoroughly? Sorry for all the questions, I mostly wanted to know what the program experience is like at SFSU.

Hi! Good questions. You do get support and all the faculty want you to succeed. They really emphasize that once you're in the program, the competition is over. They want to ensure we all pass. The material is a lot but it's to be expected. For our cohort, we started a group chat to support each other and it's worked well. You get support in the labs and you're not expected to be perfect. Skills check offs can be intimidating but they're not going to fail you for not doing something perfectly. The med calculation tests every semester can be intimidating and yes you cannot continue on if you don't pass them, but you get a couple chances. No one I know of failed out because of it, everyone was able to pass on the second chance if they needed it. Each cohort has a student representative who can communicate with the faculty about workload and concerns, which helps when work is overbearing. Most professors are very accommodating.
