San Francisco State University (SFSU) Entry Level Master of Science in Nursing (ELM) - Fall 2024

Published

Hi! I wanted to start a thread for SFSU ELMSN applicants for fall of 2024. I'm actually a current student who began the program in fall 2023 and wanted to provide a place to answer any questions applicants might have about the program. Our application cycle didn't have any connection to those further along in the program than us when we applied, which made it difficult to find information. So please reach out with any questions, concerns, or to connect with other applicants!

Hi Peyton! I also selected psychiatric as a specialty and was waitlisted! Where are you in the waitlist?

I think it might be safe to assume the waitlist is based on speciality based on what Sarah had mentioned for last cohort and what we're seeing with everyone's numbers.

I'm number 4! How about you?

Last year they gave people waitlist numbers based on their chosen specialty, did they just give you a general number this year?

Hi @sarahk09 do you know how many students there are within each speciality from your cohort?

how many people does it say are on the waitlist for you guys? I chose pediatric concentration and mine says 20 people on the list

20 as well

Hi! Does anyone know is it 20 total spots or 20 spots per specialty?

@Bori @girlypop Hi! I called the admissions office this morning and they let me know that there is only one waitlist of 20 people. It does not matter which concentration you chose and that they will accept students in order from the waitlist of 20 spots.

I was nervous because in the previous 2023 forum it sounded like there was a waitlist for each concentration so I called as soon as they opened this morning.

Feeling a little confused now... hahaha

That doesn't make sense though because 2 people said they were #1 on the waitlist... I wonder if they're trying to confuse us on purpose or they don't actually know the right information

Maybe those two people are tied for the first spot on the waitlist?

The numbers are kinda all over the place. I'm a public health/community specialty and so is one other person. There's like 8 geriatric specialties, maybe 2 mental health, 2 admin, and a handful of women's health specialties.

I'm lucky number 7 haha

Yea maybe it's possible that applicants tied for a position are randomly picked as spots open with admissions going down the list. I can imagine it would be hard deciding why this #1 should be selected over the other #1 first so they give equal priority to both.. then proceed to #2 and so forth

Hey! I'm also number 7... so I called back today and asked what was going on. The administrative staff I talked to said that it shouldn't be based on concentration but maybe this year will be different and could possibly be? Or that it's a system error...

She let me know that multiple students called about this so she's also a little confused and sent an email to figure out what's going on and should have a better idea by eod.

I feel like from what everyone is saying, maybe it is based on specialty? I'm hoping it's not because that just means it's even more competitive...
