San Diego UCSD July new grad RN program

U.S.A. California

Published

I recently applied and sent my questionnaire back for the UCSD new grad program for July 2010. Has anyone done the same and heard back from them? I noticed they took off the job posting already.

Any info/tips/news/advice regarding the program and or the interview process? Thanks and good luck to all of us new grads :] (especially ones (like me) who graduated last year in may 2009 and are still looking for a job :[ )

I got hired on Fri 21st for SICU at UCSD. They only hired 2 new grads and 2 experienced nurses on the floor. I heard that the other units (who are hiring a little later, so don't lose hope) are only hiring about those #s too. So 2-4 per unit. Oh and my unit was "forwarded 10." I'm not really sure why they are counting the experienced nurses into the new grad program. Maybe they only count as new employees, but go through the same training. Good luck everyone! And if the other new grad for SICU is out there, message me! :) Or the experienced nurses too.

congrats! when do you start?

Congrats on the SICU position Hopeful new grad RN!!! That MUST be the BEST feeling ever. Have you been searching for a job for awhile now? Did you have a lot of prior healthcare experience (i.e. CNA, med assistant etc)? How was the interview? Was it with a panel? Sorry so many questions, just wondering!

Yeah, I'm remaining hopeful that I will @ least score an interview. I recently graduated from a BSN program, so I have not had a real "nursing interview" yet hehe. Thanks for all the valuable info! Good luck with the new grad program. If you hear any other inside new grad info, do let us know! :)

Have a wonderful Memorial Day people! SD weather is simply beautiful!!!

Thanks! It feels great. I was burnt out from the job hunt. I looked for 7months (4.5 after the boards). But now the wait was worth it. I had 3 years of work experience at a hospital in mental health. I have another degree in Psychology. I think every unit is different in the interviewing process, but I had 3 people at mine. It was difficult, but not the standard interview type questions. I don't think it would have been possible to prepare. Someone asked me on a different forum for advice about getting hired. I addressed more towards a job in ICU, but really it'd be similar for any RN position. And it'll give you an idea of what I think are good resume booster tips. If you wanted to read my tips: SICU new grad - Nursing for Nurses.

But ya, getting an interview takes forever. I don't feel I really got looked at until I had: graduated, my license, BLS & ACLS, volunteer work, letters of recommendations, better resume/cover letters. Then I got 2 interviews in one week. I think going in with confidence is huge. Knowing that you are a great fit for the job. Letting them know that you will work hard, ask a ton of questions, and work in a team environment. And when you are applying, apply to everything and everywhere if possible. If you want a specialty then apply, but also go for the regular jobs. I began to realize that if I had ended up in Med/Surg for a year or two that it wouldn't have killed me. A job is a job, and I need experience. And the sooner you get a job, the sooner you can transfer to the area you actually want to do. I did get lucky and got a great job, in a great unit, and an excellent hospital.

Let me know if you have any more questions. :lol2:

congrats! when do you start?

I start June 15th! :D In the interview, I asked what I should do to prepare before orientation, and they told me to rest! haha So.... I'm trying to rest and not think about everything I don't remember and don't know...

Specializes in My son...for now..

Congratulations... My hope continues to be renewed when I see these posts. Our turn is coming you all!!!!!

YEAH FOR HOPEFULNEWGRAD!!!

I was offered a position on 5 West at the Hillcrest campus! They are hiring two new grads on that floor. My start date is June 15th!!

Wow Congrats tclu! Is 5 West a Telemetry floor? Must be the best feeling ever!!! I'm so happy for you.

I'm scheduled for an interview on the 18th for 6 East (Med Surg Infectious Disease unit) in Hillcrest. Do you guys have any interview tips? :) I know all interviews are different, but any bit of advice helps. This will be my FIRST nursing interview!!

I wish everyone the BEST of luck!!!!!!

They might ask you questions about the nursing process, sbar or medication rights. Be prepared for scenario questions, like tell us a time when you had a difficult situation and how you handled it. They will ask you the typical questions like why you want to work here, what can you contribute to this place, and what are you strengths and weaknesses. It took me a full year to find a new grad job. Good luck!

congrats to those who were offered positions to work with UCSD.

I applied to UCSD when they first posted the position on their website. I received the e-mail with the questionnaire on may 27 and the e-mail with them telling me that my resume would be forwarded to the hiring managers on a med surg floor/unit on june 2. i have not yet heard from them for an interview, but i am hoping that they will contact me soon. i don't live in san diego (im from SF) and hope that where i currently live does not weigh on their decision for an interview/position. i graduated may 2009 and am hoping for at least an interview. please keep us posted if anyone else gets interviewed or hired! its always great news to hear and keeps us hopeful. =)

Hi SD Chick. I am really interested in applying to UCSD's New grad program and I noticed that you had scored and interview. Can you please tell us how it went? What kind of questions did they ask and what credentials you have. I hope you got the job :)

Hi did you hear anything from ucsd? I want to apply for the next opening and wanted to know what i should do to prepare

Hi True nurse25 and Bebegurl47,

So I had my interview on Friday, in my opinion it went well and I left there feeling good. But who knows?!! I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. It sounds like each unit at UCSD does their own style of interviewing because mine was different than my other classmate's interview in another department. My interview was more panel style, it included the nurse manager and a lot the other staff nurses on the floor. They asked basic questions like: tell me about yourself, strengths and weaknesses, difficult patient situations, why UCSD and things like that. Everyone was super nice! My classmate's interview consisted of meeting with the manager of the floor and the assistant manager and basically pretty similar questions were asked. I find out this coming week if I get it...so everyone please keep your fingers crossed!

As for credentials, I had a bachelors degree already before pursuing my nursing degree, so I had about 5 years work experience in clinical research. Never did the CNA or Med Assistant thing. I also have my ACLS, so that may have helped. In my opinion, I think what really makes an application stand out among thousands is going to be your questionnaire they have you fill out after you apply. Spend a lot of time on that because that how they will truly find out more about "you" and what kind of person you are. Hope this helps. Let me know if you guys have any other questions!
