San Antonio Xtians Hospitals

Published

Hello,

While applying for jobs I've noticed there are a few Christian hospitals down here e.g. St. Luke's, Methodist, Christus etc.

I've never worker for a Christian hopital. The only experience that I had was in nursing school when I spent a day in a private Christian hospice facility. At this facility I attended a small meeting and they bowed their heads and went into prayer at the end. I felt rather uncomfortable, because I'm not a Christian and I felt put on the spot and I stood out.

Does anyone here work at one of the above hospitals? Do they start and end meetings in prayer? Is religion really much of an issue? I'm just trying to determine what my comfort level would be.

I don't know the answer to your question and I don't really consider myself a Christian, but the way you spelled Christian in your headline could be considered disrespectful. I could be wrong, but that might be why you haven't gotten an answer to your question. Just a thought.

I work for Christus. My day at work is like any other day at any other hospital. The only time we have ever prayed is at orientation. Christus is a Catholic hospital system so keep in mind that they are sometimes more strict on tattoos, body piercings, etc... They do not preform abortions at their facilities. No one is going to try to "convert" you or make you pray. Your job is to provide great care to your patients. As a nurse you will encounter people with many different beliefs no matter what "type" hopital you are at. You should be supportive of your patient as you are a patient advocate.

I don't understand how it could be considered disrespectful? Please help me understand how I've offended you. Xtian, Xmas are just abbreviations as X=Christ (Latin).

You haven't offended me, but I used to use the X-mas thing all the time until one of my friends said something to me about it. She said it was disrespectful. I figure if she felt like that, maybe others did, too. Not to worry. I'm sure, if somebody's offended they'll say something. So far, nobody seems to be offended. So I'll just go sit in the corner and be quiet. :chair:

How hard is it to just type Christ instead of just X...X saves you like 1 second, unless you type really slow

I work for a Christus facility, though not in San Antonio, and like the above poster said, it is exactly the same as any other hospital. I was not raised Christian, and would even say that I am not at all religious. To me it was no big deal to say a prayer at the end of our orientation and bow my head. God means different things to different people, but if you're spiritual, you should be able to adapt to any type of prayer. Even if you are not spiritual, did you not learn in school that sometimes patients want you to pray with them for comfort? You just do whatever it takes to help that person, and comfort them while you think or pray about whatever you want. It's personal, and no one has to know what you are thinking. As for the hospital itself, it absolutely does not try to force its beliefs on anyone working there. In fact, some of the nicest people that I have met are from the spriitual care department! And many of the staff have tattoos that show through their scrubs! You need to be open minded if you are going to be a nurse. You will be taking care of people not only from different religious backgrounds, but from various socio-economical backgrounds as well. Christus is a great organization to work for. And, FYI, if you feel the need to use X instead of Christ, (Latin??, I don't think so), it should have been spelled " Xian" !! The word Christian does not have 2 t's.

So anyways....Back to your actual question....I have been to and worked in the Baptist, Christus, and Methodist systems. and there was never any requirement for or question of your personal faith and no pushing of the hospital's named faith on you. As for piercings and tattoos, they were never an issue either, but I never met any staff with anything outrageous. Good luck in finding employment with whomever you choose.
