I was wondering if you guys know if thats possible to get into the accelerated program if you have a C grade on Physiology? I havent gotten the final grades for this semester, and I am nervious...
Anyone from the San Francisco Bay area/Sacramento, or CA in general got in with a C? Please, share, I am sooooooooooooo nervious.....
thank you!!!
I ended up getting on the waitlist for Samuel Merritt BSN fall entry. I'm not quite sure how, since as I mentioned before I have two C's on my record (statistics and general chemistry). I think my prerequisite GPA was somewhere around a 3.45 or something--so very low in comparison. I even beat out one of my friends who applied with a 3.85 and didn't even make the waitlist! I guess they really do look at more than just grades. I had an excellent letter of recommendation from my Physio teacher, a pretty good essay (I have volunteer experience, my CNA, and a family history of nurses), and in the 98th percentile on the NET. Now I'm just hoping everyone before me on the waitlist decides it's too much money!
Congratulations! And do not give up. Sooooo many people drop our of Samuel Merritt, if you stay positive you will get in. When I started, way back when, one of my "waitlist" friends started during our second/third week because of dropouts! Stay positive. And apply for every scholarship they offer (they usually have a ton that come out Jan/Feb - always check out the fin aide office/student services office - there are soo many scholarships/grants that are soo easy to get, save any recommendations you get, essays you write to reuse for scholaship applications, it'll make it easy. And keep a copy of anything you give samuel merritt! they lose everything.

Thanks! But I'm not too hopeful for this semester since I'm #11 on the waitlist (out of 27). Apparently they only accepted around 4 people off the waitlist last fall. They also sent an e-mail out about a month ago saying they were anticipating 4-6 spots for transfers total. Wishful thinking. But I'm trying to keep positive!
Still waiting here on the waitlist....
I heard on allnurses.com that they just recently offered admission to #7 on the waitlist so they're getting up there! We'll see, though. I'm hoping that with the bad economy, people might decide it's just too expensive for them. Or maybe people will start hearing back from other schools they're interested in and decide to take those offers instead. Or at the very least I'm hoping #'s 8, 9, and 10 on the waitlist decided not to go and it'll jump straight to me! Wishful thinking, I know.
Keeping my fingers crossed...
Thanks BigMan, that's really helpful information. My friend also started the program this past spring and said she was concerned when a few of her friends dropped out and noone came to replace them even though it was early on in the semester.
I'd e-mail the school about it, but I don't want to be a hassle. Perhaps it would be better for me to e-mail asking about admission during the first couple of weeks of fall semester closer towards the start date?

I applied for Spring in the regular BSN intercollegiate program. Now it's called the 2 + 2 program I think. Anyway, if you want something bad enough I say go for it. Maybe there was something going on in your life that made if difficult to concentrate on those classes in which you got a C. Write a quick letter, attached to your app telling that story. Explain it so they understand that you know you can do better.
My grades were not great, but I was going through some dramatic stuff with my children. So, I explained that and attached it to my envelopes with my transcripts and amazingly got in. I really believe they look for students who have strong goals/want to change the world/come from difficult backgrounds/have challenges and are facing them/have a good attitude and/or show individuality, irregardless what life hands them. Also, for you application essays, if they still do that, take your time to make it your own. Oh, and save any essays you write for any college....you can always use them for scholarships later on with a little touch up.
Go for it, even if you do not get in the first time you apply, apply again.Talk with the counselors, find out what they really want. Most of the counselors there are really nice. Oh, anything you send them...keep a copy! SMC is notorious for losing things.
take care.
