Samuel Merritt ABSN - Spring 2019

Published

Hello!

I'm new to this site, but have been following the allnurses posts regarding Samuel Merritt program applications religiously for a while now. I recently applied to the ABSN and ELMSN - FNP program for the July 1 deadline. Thought it would be great to have a place to provide insight, stay updated and share experiences with all of you through this terrifying journey. I mean we ONLYYY have to wait until October - November to hear anything. Let the wait begin.....

Looking forward to hearing from you all :)

Not sure if this is helpful or not but I figured the people who are getting denied may want to know others stats. I am on the waiting list 52/60 so very high.

My undergraduate degree was in Kinesiology and my gpa was 3.1

My last 60 units gpa is 3.6

I currently have 3 pre recs that I need to complete and will be complete after this semester

My hesi average is 92%- I got a 90 on the english, 92 on the math, and a 96 on A and P

I volunteer at a mentoring program that works with under privileged youth in Oakland

My current job I work with athletic related injuries but not exactly nursing stuff so its semi health care related.

I went in to the drop in advising apt in Oak this past Tuesday to as how to strengthen my application as well as i emailed Derek from San Mateo asking the same things and they both said I am a very strong candidate and they have no suggestions on how to strengthen my application... They just said it was a very competitive cohort.... Which is frustrating but I am going to apply again and hope that since there are three start dates that I will get in since there will be more spots open.

Got my rejection letter too. Good luck guys!

I just got my rejection letter too :(. See you guys in a few weeks or so for summers application!

Sorry for those who were denied, congrats to those who got in, and good luck to those on the waitlist. It really seems like the system has got out of hand as far as well qualified applicants not getting accepted because of highly competitive cohorts. If there is such a demand for nurses in the field and huge shortages, then I don't see why schools are not creating more campuses to allow all of these amazing people into a program so they can impact the profesion in a positive way. I hope to see an expansion of programs in the future but for now this is all of our's reality. What was mentioned before about the Summer cohort where there are more positions available may be the way to get in. Good luck to everyone who is applying in December! All of you girls and guys are awesome on here and thank you for contributing to such a solid thread!

I agree! I've asked a bunch of different people why it's so competitive getting into all nursing programs, and each person pretty much said the same thing: there are not enough nursing educators at the schools to teach more students if they were to admit more. And a lot of nurses who go to get their masters don't want to become professors because the job doesn't pay as much as becoming NPs do.

Also, sorry to those who weren't accepted. :( You guys all seem like you have plenty to offer! Hopefully next submission!

Has anyone else been accepted to San Mateo's ABSN cohort?

So the solution is to incentivize educators! Maybe when industry figures out this problem, they will put their money where it is needed:)

Sorry to all that got denied :( I wish you the best for the April start for San Mateo or June for the others. I was accepted to the San Mateo program and I hope my stats help you for next cycle.

Last 60 GPA - ~3.35

Science Prereq - 4.0

HESI - 98%

I had an full-time summer internship in an ED when I was in college and now I have been working as a Youth Director. My passion is working with youth and kids(hopefully pediatric nurse of some type), so maybe that looked good that I had experience with the age range? I got two letters of rec from A&P professors that I knew pretty well.

I had two classes in progress when I submitted, but I updated my NursingCAS with those grades by August.

Good luck to you all in the future!!

I decided not to retake the HESI A2 because like many of you said, it's not worth it. I started on my nursing app (I'm applying for san mateo summer 2019) and I was wondering, what document should be uploaded under "catalog course description" if any of you guys remember?

I hope I can get in, but I'm afraid my stats aren't good enough. I previously heard fro two friends who graduated from SMU's ABSN program saying it wasn't too difficult to get in as SMU only cared for grades and volunteer experience, but I guess that was only when they applied 2-3 years ago

For the catalog course description, you need to create a list of all the pre-requisite courses and include where they were taken, the course name & abbreviation, along with the description you would find when you registered for the course. It's not hard to find. For example, if you took microbiology during your undergrad and are using it to represent your grade, you can google search the "name of the institution microbiology course description/catalog AND the year". The first links should provide you with a catalog where you can copy and paste this into your own document.

Were you able to get your wrong campus situation resolved boogalooga?

Kind of! I still have my spot in San Mateo as of now, but was placed #2 on the Sac waitlist as well since they made a mistake with my application. Very weird/unique situation. But it sounds like we will more than likely be attending in Sac together in January! :)

I have to put down my deposit for San Mateo by Friday but was reassured that it will transfer over to Sac if I haven't heard back about the status of the waitlist by then.
