Samuel Merritt ABSN Spring 2018

Published

Hey guys! I'm new to this forum but has anyone applied for Spring 2018 Cohort yet? I'm not sure if the applications are open yet but that is the cohort that I want to apply to. I will have my BA in Sociology in December 2017 and I am still doing my prerequisites. If you've already applied or are a current student, let me know if you think I'll have a chance at getting in.

Degree: BA in Sociology

Last 60 unit GPA: 3.4 (hoping to raise it to 3.6 by end of year)

Science GPA: 3.5 (still need to do Microbiology & Physiology)

Non-Science: 3.1 (Completed all)

CNA License: Yes

Paid Job Experience: Yes for 1.5 years

*Haven't taken HESi exam yet, but I will this month

Please help, what were your GPA's when you got in and when did you find out you were accepted? Also, if you were ever on the waitlist, when did you finally get accepted?

Just did my letter of intent to the San Mateo cohort for Spring 2018!!! Do not be discouraged if you didn't get in, I was waitlisted then denied and finally got in this time. I did very well on my HESI but I didn't have the best last 60 unit GPA, I also didn't have all of my pre recs done (proof that you shouldn't be discouraged or doubtful if you don't have perfect stats... we've all been through obstacles on this journey already... we have what it takes) so KEEP PUSHING... IT WILL HAPPEN. I've been blessed to have guidance through this, so please if anyone wants to know anything feel free to shoot me a message. I would like to return the help and advice that allowed me to move forward.

I was waitlisted then denied also...with much better scores on the HESI the second time around. I feel very discouraged and feel as though I need to retake 2 years of classes and become a CNA just to be considered.

What is your last 60 quarter unit/science prereq gpa? I became a CNA and worked at a facility for a few months prior to applying, and I highly recommend taking that route!

I know it can be frustrating, but don't give up. Don't let this obstacle determine your path. It might not make sense now, but I highly recommend seeing your application overall and talking to one of the counselors. The HESI exam is important, but try to see other areas where your application can improve. I didn't get perfect scores on the HESI. Though, I focused on one crucial thing that's important to me in the medical field, and I structured my application based on that.

Seriously, don't give up. Its so odd sometimes because you never know what they are looking for. My application was MUCH stronger the second time I applied, and thats when I was denied. You just never know and thats why you have to keep trying. You got this :)

Does anyone know how much time is given to those who got accepted to confirm their offer and claim their spot for the cohort? I'm on the waitlist and anxiously waiting and hoping for open spots.

I believe they get 10 days

I know the counselors are super busy right now, but for those who have been rejected in the past, how long did it take for a counselor to get in touch with you?

Hi there! I was accepted to the San Mateo cohort. This is my second round of nursing app cycles but my first time applying to Samuel Merritt. I am happy to help anyone who would like some advice on making their application stronger. I do want to point out that although grades and experience are important, the personal statement is what separates you from other candidates.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of people tend to write their whole essay summarizing their past experiences. I think what is more important is to have your essay focused on what you are doing right now and your nursing aspirations. What are your nursing goals? How did your experiences in the past shape you to have these goals and equipped you with the skills necessary for it? How do you plan to bring value to the nursing field and what really drives you? Also, look at the mission and vision statement of the school. Does this align with your goals? These are some questions to think about. Since the admission counselors already have your resume, they know what your experiences are and they are reading your essay to evaluate your character. Good luck!

Hi, hmw004, thanks for the offer! Can I PM you my personal statement? I thought I hit those questions but I still didn't get in.

Sure! Send your essay/resume to my email [email protected] :).

Hi everyone! I am currently retaking my science classes and some other fluff courses to boost my GPA as my undergrad GPA was pretty low. I will finish my prereq classes by the end of next summer semester (2018). I would like to apply for Fall 2019 ABSN cohort, but I will have a whole semester still in progress when applications are due. After reading the forums on here, would I still have a good chance of getting in Fall cohort? I just wanted to do some research and see what input some of you guys might have. Thanks in advance!

The counselor said having 3 classes in progress when you apply is totally fine, and most applicants don't have all of their prereqs completed yet. I'd say it depends on your gpa after spring semester and how the rest of your application looks at that time. I don't think it'd hurt to apply and give it a try though! If you end up not getting in, you can even ask them for tips on strengthening your app.
