Samuel Merritt ABSN: January 2009

Published

Hi, I have applied to Samuel Merritt and was wondering if anyone who already knows the process could explain it all to me. The admissions process, any interview required, notices of acceptance/rejection.

Also, I was told that the program is divided into 5 terms, but the Academic Calendar on the site only gives dates for Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. How are the terms divided up. I was told the first and last are short while the middle ones are much longer, but I would like to know approximate dates.

Thank you

I am in the current Sac ABSN program, and we didn't find out if we were accepted until November, so be patient. I know that the school is still accepting applications, so I wouldn't worry at all if you haven't heard anything. As far as the schedule, it is broken up into three semesters and most classes are 5 weeks long. It starts with health assessment then 10 weeks of med surg. Then second semester is critical care, L & D, then peds, each 5 weeks. Third semester is mental health and community health together for ten weeks (we are finishing now), and then 5 weeks of preceptorship in a specialty area. That's it! It flies by but it is manageable, especially because we all know how to study and take tests, etc... If you get in, just take it a week at a time a don't stress!! Try to avoid people who have high stress levels because it will wear you down. Oh, and you will do about 567 group projects, so try to be with people you work well with. Best of luck!

Hi Davisaggie,

I'm also from davis:) Is it possible to know your stat regarding gpa, etc. just so I can compare my chances? How do u like the program?

Davisaggieamy:

Would you happen to have a copy of the class schedule that includes dates for the classes, breaks, and holidays? I don't know if you have one, but I'd really like to be able to look at the year-at-a-glance type calendar. Also, you're in the Sac program, right? I know it ends in December, but will the graduation ceremony be in December or the following Spring (May/June)?

Hey I just got word that the wait-list will be finalized this week. Oh, I'm so nervous. This is for the Sac campus, but I'm not sure if it will be the same for San Mateo. Though I'm pretty certain it may be.

Prayers, hopes, good-luck wishes, and fingers crossed!!!

Hi All, There are academic calendars at the samuel merritt website, just click on the calendar link from the home page. As far as graduation, it's only held once a year in Oakland which is a bummer for us in Sac :sniff:. But we still have the pinning ceremony which is supposedly very nice. We're planning ours right now and it is going to be beautifully decorated, so we are all looking at this like a graduation too. Ummm, as far as my "stats" I had about a 3.5, but I can't remember my NET score. Before I applied I received my CNA license, had done volunteer work, and worked as an insurance agent (which I hated!) As far as the program is concerned, it really isn't that bad. The hardest part is care plans in med-surg and critical care. But I think busy work is kept to somewhat of a minimum. There will always be complaints, you just have to go with the flow. And pretty much the entire class got the placements they wanted for preceptorships. The biggest downside is of course the cost, but it's only a year, so the math works out. Best of luck, please ask any questions you have.

Hey so I got a letter from SMC. I'm waitlisted number 3. I don't know how good my chances are. I hope you heard good news:). I still need to take pharmacology and get it done by Dec.1...but I don't want to fork over 700 bucks and not get in. I don't know what to do. It's sorta a gamble.

Hi Davisaggie,

thank you so much for your insights:). I was wondering if you could help me out with making this whole process a little less stressful.

I am currently waitlisted number 3 for san mateo cohort. What do you think my chances are? do you know anyone in your group that was accepted from the waitlist?

Also since the economy is down, is it harder to get a loan if I do get in??? what types of loans should I get? I'm so unfamiliar with loans and frankly I am scared of them. I already have debts from UC Davis that I am currently paying off...and I know I won't be able to get the same types of loans I got for Davis. I would greatly appreciate your help in this area.

Did you have to submitt any new medical information when you were accepted? I no longer have health insurance:( and going anywhere to get new sets of shots/tests will be out of my buget. Do they accept pass immunizations and medical records stuff? or must they be current?

thankyou in advance Davisaggie!:wink2:

HI EVERYONE!

has anyone gotten letters from samuel merritt for Jan 2009??

I received a packet about a week ago. I know of a couple other people (here in Sacramento) who have also received their packets. :)

Hi!

I was accepted to the San Mateo cohort that starts this Spring and I am a bit anxious to know what the schedule will be like, or at least get an idea.

If you can help, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

I'm starting a thread for those who have been accepted into the Sac ABSN program beginning in January. Congratulations everyone!

I sent in the initial $350 tuition fee last week and went up to Davis/Sac yesterday in search of housing. I was really set on living in Davis since I went there as an undergraduate, but now I'm realizing that the commute will be tedious not to mention a waste of time and gas. So.... I checked out a couple places close to the school off of West El Camino and they actually seem pretty nice. After reading some online reviews it seems like The Regatta is one of the best. I may be looking for a roomate since I cannot afford over $1000/month for a one bedroom! Have you guys thought about where you'd like to live? The Adagio seems nice too. Checked out Larkspur Woods but there was a sign out front that warned us of cancer causing chemicals inside... not sure what that was all about.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Tricia

I haven't been technically accepted, but I just got placed 3rd on the waitlist for Sac. I was told that typically 8 from the waitlist end up in the program. So I'll be moving up to Sac in Jan if that happens. I'm pretty scared about the housing search, too.

Are you waitlisted for San Mateo? Cuz I got a call today saying I'm waitlisted #3 at Sacramento. Aw man, I'm so nervous. I hope I can start in january.

hurleygrly137, at #3 on the waitlist I'm almost positive you'll get in. I'm currently in the Sac ABSN program, and our class had someone who was #7 on last years waitlist, who got in.
