Hi everyone! Just wanted to get the conversation started for those who applied for the ABSN Fall 2019 cohort. I applied for the Sacramento location but would love to connect with all who applied in general! Good luck everyone!

I totally get it. It's tough to find a balance between naivety and confidence. There are so many variables in the application that it does seem really tough to determine who gets accepted and who doesn't. From my outsider viewpoint, you seem like a strong applicant. Have you completed all your prerequisites?
It's amazing to see the persistence among everyone! I really appreciate all the input and sharing of personal experiences. I know they say they look at the GPA for the last 60 units for the application. I too, like several of you have mentioned, had a less than stellar undergraduate GPA. I'm wondering if they still take any of that into consideration? Seeing as how I graduated 27 years ago, it seems relatively absurd to do so. I've had over 90 units since I earned my BA, and have clearly demonstrated academic success since then. Thoughts?
I think that them not mentioning a GPA requirement beside the last 60/90 units is them telling it's not as weighted in their decision. Other school make it known that that isn't the case. Im sure if they were splitting hairs maybe, but from what I hear they do really like improvement if you've applied before, as well as experience in the healthcare field.
I went to one of the info sessions and what I remember is that if they had a LOR from a nurse it would be better than from a doctor! Hope that helps!

I applied to Samuel Merritt Fall 2019 cohort - San Mateo campus. It’s nice to have a space where everyone is going through the same process (the applying, waiting game etc.). I wish everyone good luck, including myself, and hope to hear good news from everyone soon.
Welcome Drea143! I agree that it’s great to have people who can walk through this with each other. It’s hard to explain the anxiety to people who are not pre-nursing students! Is this your first application cycle?
Based on previous threads here on allnurses from the last year or two, it looks like this Fall application cycle hears back around end of May or beginning of June. Does San Mateo give you any kind of timeline? Finger crossed! Good luck to you!!

RiverDancer, I think that they are pretty honest about only looking at our past 60/90 units in terms of consideration for GPA. Kathryn (in Sacramento) said that they literally get our calculated GPA from Nursing CAS, so I don’t know if they do look back on transcripts or just take the confirmation of pre-reqs and GPA from the application and move on from there? The ELM students did say that they get quizzed on past grades during the interview process, but Kathryn didn’t seem to think my past grades would hold me (or any other student) back. She said they value improvement and determination in students. So I think they believe strongly in second chances for people who have proven themselves. Fingers crossed for those of us who found our educational foothold later on in life!! ?

Lillypod, you’re right. Chamberlain is VERY unforgiving of grades. They told my friend who had a 2.9 overall GPA, but a 3.75 in her science pre-reqs, not to apply because they wouldn’t look at her pre-reqs separately. You MUST have a blanket 3.0 across the board before you can apply. And then, they don’t take a 4.0 before a 3.0. It’s like you have to have a threshold GPA to apply and after that, they look at HESI and essays more than GPA’s. So they told her to take a bunch of PE classes to get A’s and bump it up. It really doesn’t make sense to me! If you have amazing science pre-reqs and your GPA is just a tad low, you can’t apply! And she had a 95 or higher on her HESI! Go figure! I’m grateful SMU gives a break to people who are coming back for a second degree.
And that is interesting to know about LOR’s from Nurses!! Thanks for sharing that info!
