Can anybody give me an idea of what a starting nurses salary might be coming out of school in the St Louis area? Any help is appreciated.

We too relocated to Missouri from the Central Valley of California. We have been here for just over a year. I actually just went back and read some posts I put in this same thread in April of 2005! Our move was almost cancelled when I found out what nurses make in Missouri. Sure, the cost of living is less...BUT, when I bought a new car last year, I paid the same here as I would have in California. If I take a vacation, it is going to cost me the same as if I lived in California. My groceries aren't much less than I paid in California. Our utility bills are a BIT less, but I don't see much difference anywhere else. Oh..gas..that's cheaper.
It is purely insulting what nurses make here. I love Missouri and don't really want to go back to California, but I am certainly not happy with my paychecks. I am currently making just under $19/hr working in the OR. I refused to work on a floor and take 8-10 patients because I don't think that is a safe environment for anyone. Thankfully, I have pretty much a cake job now..and for less than $19/hr, that's about all I am willing to do.
I know it's not all about money, but nursing is demanding work that requires an education and critical thinking skills. I have spent LOTS of money advancing my nursing education, and I just think that we should be recognized for the job we do every day.
I am starting FNP school next month so it will be interesting to see the pay difference when I am done with the program!

Just thought I would let everyone know that SSM/St Mary's visited our SNA meeting today. Starting salary for a graduate nurse: 18.60/hr. Cant remember if evening differential was either 10 or 15% of base pay.(Maybe it was 10% for evenings, 15% for nights.) Right now all SSM facilities are paying this for GN's. They also have a $5000 sign on bonus. Plus the usual benefits(403B Plan, Vested Pension Plan, Health insurance etc).
Tuition reimbursement accrues at the rate of $4.00 per hour worked. This can then either be used for tuition payment or loan repayment. Loan repayment is capped at $12,000.00. Hope this info helps anyone who needs it!

Totally off subject, yet again.
My 5 year old nephew idolizes Chris Brown and does the little dance to "Take You Down". Yeah, he's only 5.

The St Louis pay sounds baaaaaaaddddd! I have been LPN in the ozarks for almost 2 years and I was making $14.55 in a little nursing home! I would like to move to Springfield and work in hospital, but when I was a new grad, one hospital starting pay was $11.00 hr. That sucks. Hey Barb4575, where in Arkansas do you work? I know one hospital in Mtn Home starts LPN's at $11.50, but I would have to get license in Ark.
