So it looks as though we don't have a thread going as of yet for the Sac State Spring 2014 Nursing application period, so lets get one going.
My name is Sarah and I am a current Sac State student. This is my first semester at sac state as I just transferred over from Sierra College in Rocklin. I am currently in Micro, but all other pre and co reqs done. Looking at 87 points if I don't get the 3 additional for optional criteria that I submitted for. I just submitted my application today, so now the wait begins.
Howdy, overthecliff! Not quite sure yet. I only applied to SMU and CSUS mostly because they're in the location of our new house (where we want to settle!). I, too think the SMU ABSN program would be a great fit, however, SMU is approximately $49,000 more, so the adult in me would rather suck it up for 8 more months then spend years paying that back merely because of an impatience to get into the field. So, if CSUS offers me a seat, I'm going to take it (I think) even though SMU appears to be wonderful (minus the cost).
That's wonderful your husband is doing so well, but I do sympathize about the cost of a nanny; it's too much compounded with SMU's cost, definitely. Concerning stats, I'm sure you're being modest and did wonderful if you got into SMU - it was highly competitive or so I hear. I hope we both get in and then, can complain about/celebrate our new-found careers over a much deserved coffee :)
Keep me updated and can't wait to see ya around!
hi tsklaner and mgnursing, I just have a quick question about this post. I have not applied to spring 2014, i am still in the process of finishing up my prereqs, so I will be apply sometime during this summer. I am looking at applying for spring 2015 as a second bachelor student. Just wondering, based off of what you heard, are they going to cancel second bachelor applications for all spring semesters? Or was it only spring 2014 they were talking about? I am just curious because this effects me, as Sac State was a program I was strongly considering. I live in San Diego as well so I would go up personally to ask them, but the distance is way too far.
i know this is still quite some time away, but I was just wondering if you guys knew anything, just so I could change my plans accordingly. Thank you :)
Hi nairb0888, it sounded like the spring admission period depended on the budget. The spring semesters were originally closed due to budget cuts which only allowed Sac State students to apply. I'm not sure what the rule for second bachelor students was in previous spring semesters, but at the meeting the advisor said that they found an education code that stated they could NOT prevent second bachelor students from applying to the program and she was hopeful that this would be carried on to future semesters... so if the program is open to transfer students then it should also be open to second bachelors. If you are accepted by the School of Nursing then you will receive special instructions to complete a second application to gain admission to the University.
At the meeting it sounded like if you're stats were good enough for you to get in to the program, then the School of Nursing would work with you to get past Sac States "no second bachelor" admission rule. I think they're really trying to work the second bachelor students into the traditional program right now because the ASBN program was cancelled this year due to budget cuts and they weren't sure when it would be open again.
Hey Everyone...
First, good luck to you all. I know the waiting part is really hard but it seems that most of you are in good shape. I graduated spring 2013 from Sac State's nursing program and if any of you have questions about anything I am happy to answer them. I help _______ with advising and should be able to answer most questions. If not, I can usually find out for you.
Hi VintageSwagger,
Congratulations on graduating from nursing school! I have a few questions I'm hoping you can answer for me. At the advising meetings _______ said that in the Fall semesters they get pretty far down the waitlist because a lot of students accept admission to other programs. I expect to be waitlisted for this spring semester because my TEAS score was in the low 80's. I wanted to ask if you knew how far down the waitlist the school typically goes for spring semesters. Also, I wanted to ask how the job market is for new grads. I volunteer at a hospital and I recently met a few nursing graduates that said they haven't found a job in a year. I've heard a lot of stories about nurses with no previous hospital experience struggling to find jobs but most schools I've talked to say graduates find jobs within 6 months. I'd love to hear your perspective on this. Thank you!! :)
mgnursing,
1. As far as the wait list for spring, it is usually in the 20’s. It has gone into the 30’s but that is rarer. Also, if the spring semester is only accepting applications from Sac State students it is lower d/t the lower number of applicants. If you don’t mind sharing, what is your point total? You can PM me if you prefer and I can probably give you an idea of where you will fall more or less.
2. Ok… The job market is extremely competitive. Of my graduating class of 80, about 30 have jobs and there are people from the last two semesters who haven’t found jobs either. I know people who have applied to over 200 jobs (across multiple states) and haven’t even had an interview. Others had a job offer the day of pinning.
Most major hospitals are only hiring through residency programs and they only have 2 cohorts a year. The last cohort UCDMC had they capped the number of applications to 500; which they received in less than 8 hrs. That cohort only had about 20 openings. Very few hospitals will hire you without experience outside of a residency program but it has happened. Some graduates have gone to work for clinics or for random rural hospitals in Nevada and Montana. Sorry I don’t have better news for you but I want to be as honest as I can. I hope I helped answer your questions. If you have more feel free to ask again.

Hi VintageSwagger,
I have 69 points, unless my volunteer work is accepted for points then I will be at 72 points.
I appreciate your honesty about the job market. Everyone I talked to that got a job out of college had a few years of previous hospital experience. If I don't get in this spring I'm going to look at jobs available in the hospital and check out CNA courses to hopefully get my foot in the door somewhere. My main career goal is to become an NP so I'm trying to do everything I can to get into a good program in California.

I got the e-mail too. I was hoping that it would be the end of November but I guess one more week isn't too long to wait!
