Rutgers ABSN new requirements

Published

Hi,

I'm a recent grad looking to apply to the accelerated nursing program at Rutgers Fall 2015. I saw they just made some changes to their prerequisite requirements as well as some GPA requirement adjustments. Since I'm trying to finish all my prereq courses before applying in the spring, I want to get something straightened out.

For Newark/New Brunswick we have to take an interpersonal communications course. What counts for that? I have taken multiple english classes, several psychology classes, and a healthcare ethics course that is based both on legality and heavily on conflict resolution and healthcare professional-patient communication and relations. I feel like maybe that could count, but since it isn't a communications course, I'm not sure what counts. I have been looking through the course catalog and my local community college, and I'm not seeing much that is matching the description Rutgers has submitted from their own catalog.

Has anyone recently been accepted to the Rutgers ABSN, with the new requirements, that could shed some light on either of these issues? Thanks ! :)

You should use NJ Transfer to find equivalents for all the courses, as going by name alone my leave you with an unaccepted course (for example, not all Nutrition classes are proven equivalents, as per the site). I took Interpersonal Communication online via Atlantic Cape, as it was the least expensive match to take out of county and online. I know that CCM also has an equivalent. Bergen and Hudson do not run their version of the equivalent, as far as I know.

Hi, I'm also applying for the Rutgers ABSN for fall 2015 (Newark). I graduated from Rutgers May 2014, spent 2 years at union county college before that. I took a course called ENG128 Dynamics of Communication at UCC and rutgers said this was the approved course for that pre-req. Not sure if that helps but if you took any English course that deals with communications it probably will count, give them a call and they'll let you know.

Hi! I am also planning on applying to the ABSN program for Fall 2015, but I am still missing about 5 prerequisites :( which I plan to take in the spring either at UCC or at Rutgers. Does anyone know if I have less chances of being accepted to the program if most of my pre-reqs are done at a community college? Even though my undergraduate degree was done at Rutgers? Thanks!

Hi Lina16,

It makes no difference whether you do your prerequisites at a community college or Rutgers. I had originally planned to apply for Fall 2015, but they extended the deadline and decided to allow students who are taking their last prerequisites to apply for Spring 2015, so I got in for Spring 2015! With a Rutgers bachelors and community college prerequisites. All they care about is (mostly) your prereq grades and bachelor's gpa. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply, I was a little worried about that. and yay congrats on being accepted :) good luck with the program!

hello everyone, I am planning on applying to the Accelerated Nursing Program for Fall 2015. I went to Rutgers as an undergrad and I received a 2.9 GPA and I still have to finish up some pre-reqs. I am sure I can do well in the prereqs that I have left because I am a lot more focused and determined now than I was as undergrad. Do you think I have a shot at getting into the program even though my gpa is on the low side?

Hi rutgersstudent,

The school will look at your overall GPA from your undergraduate degree & pre-reqs for the program. I am in the program right now, speaking from experience on behalf of my classmates, one of them got in with a GPA less than the requirement (GPA: 3.1) that they state on the website. Just do your best in all your classes!! Good luck!! Majority of us have 3.5 and above for our total GPA.

can we have outstanding prerequisites at the time of application? also does the CPR need to be completed before application?

You're supposed to have that all done. However, I know this semester they took some people who were still finishing prereqs. I think they had fewer applicants than expected because people had to take time to get all the new requirements done, so not sure they will make that exception in the future. Someone i know who had signed up for an info session in nov was planning to apply for next Sept, and they told her to bring all her information to the info session to have an interview, and she got accepted shortly after.

how are you guys doing with all this waiting? or are you going somewhere else?

I only applied to Rutgers and I'm getting so tired of waiting. It makes it a little easier to wait since I don't have the pressure of other programs getting things going, but it's also frustrating to not know what's in store for me a month or so from now

When I read previous posts, they never took this long, it's insane and registration starts July 6th. That's my only comfort that they have to give decisions by then.
