RPN to RN in Ontario: what schools accept private education as an RPN?

Published

Hi Fellow Nurses,

I was wondering if anyone knows any College/University in Ontario that accepts private school education as an RPN to do the bridge on to the RN Program? George Brown/Trent University doesn't. I have been doing my research over this. If anyone can help me. That would be very helpful.

Thank you. Happy New Year.

Where did you go to school? Was it an accredited program? I don't know any that would accept private education.

What is "private education"?

Do you mean a for profit school such as Sprott-Shaw, Career College, etc?

I don't know of any private or career college in Ontario that offers the PN program..(I assume Ontario because you said RPN)

Thank you for the replies.

I went to a private college in BC specifically Stenberg College. Then I moved to Ontario wanting to do the bridge on for the RN. I got accepted to the program at George Brown/Trent University then they told me they weren't able to accept me and took the offer away because I went to a private college and not a community college. I didn't think this was a problem considering we all wrote the same Canadian National Exam.

Any help or advice would be helpful. Thank you.

I would check with the CNO, but in Ontario PN education isn't accredited through the private system, so it probably won't be recognized, unfortunately. You may have to do a refresher course/upgrade...the CNO will have to provide you with that information.

Stenburg has always been looked as a business school, not really a font of academia.

BC still has the short PN education, correct? Did your course include university transfer level English, Sociology, Psychology, etc? That could be where your problem lies. AB and ON include these courses in the basic PN education and is why the bridges exist in the form they do in these provinces.

Would Stenburg's programme have got you admitted to a BC bridge programme?

I will contact CNO and see what other information they can give me regarding this situation. I am already a Licensed Nurse under CNO so they credited me for that. I will look up the refresher course/upgrade.

As for BC---Yes, I would have been accepted in BC to do the bridge in program. The reason I moved to Ontario because of the lack of LPN jobs in BC.

Thank you for the output vintagePN and Fiona59 :)

See the problem that you appear to be having is not getting your education validated, you did that by passing CPNRE.

It is probably the method of instruction that is the issue. Stenburg is a "career college" aka trade/vocational school. It's probably the lack of transferable university credits that is the issue.
