I have a friend who is an LPN in Edmonton and works with premie babies at the Children Stollery Hospital. Not L&D, but still...never thought it was possible for LPN to work with babes but apparently they can in Alberta. Don't see that in BC though as far as I know. I've applies to UBCO for my RN cause I also want to work in L&D one day. Good luck!

The only areas at the Stollery where LPNs are working with "premature" babies is on the general peds floors. Those babies might have been born prematurely and are stable but can't be discharged yet for some reason. There are no LPNs in any of the Stollery ICUs.
LPNs in NICU in AB?? Wow. They tried to do that here and there was a big uproar so they reversed their decision.
Yup. And it's been very successful from what I hear. I personally don't ever want to set foot in an ICU area but people are different. RAH is a destination delivery hospital for high risk pregnancies in northern Alberta and parts of SK and the Territories.
I know that in several rural hospitals LPNs worked L&D when I was in training. One of my classmates interviewed for a job as a new grad.
People have to remember that today's LPNs are have the same basic education foundation as diploma RNs, the last of who graduated in 2009. Would you be against those diploma RNs working those areas?

Hi! I'm currently taking Pre-health and will be applying to practical nursing at Conestoga. My dream job would be to work in L&D, but I'm aware there are not many jobs available to RPN's. does anyone have any advice on how to make my two years in the RPN program help with my ultimate goal? Are there opportunities to choose your where your placements are?
I have thought about taking the Perinatal Nursing program at Conestoga after I graduate, and maybe bridging to RN. Any other suggestions?
Any my help would be greatly appreciated
