Hi there :) Can someone help me or give me an idea what to do? I am canadian RPN, Registered nurse in the Philippines and LPN in Michigan, i want to move in Michigan but i dont know how to start applying for a job, i dont know if im qualified to work as LPN or RN in Michigan. Please help me on my situation i really want to move to work in US. thanks

You say that you are already an LPN in Michigan. Did you already take the NCLEX-PN?

If you have completed your program in Philippines as a Registered Nurse, and you have dcomp-leted the CGFNS exam, then you would be permitted to take the NCLEX-RN for Michigan licensure. Michigan is one of only a handful of states that actually requires foreign grads to write the CGFNS exam, if they do not already have five years of experience in another US state as an RN.

But lets back up a moment? You never sat for the RN exam in Canada? Is there a reason why?

With only the LPN for MI, you would not be granted a green card right away.

To be fast-tracked, you need to have an RN. And you need to have permission to work in the US.

If you can be more specific, perhaps I can give you some more information.

(My original license was MI---grew up there.)

Provinces require Phillipino RN's to take extra courses before letting them write and practice. A lot don't want to do it and choose to write for the PN license as they don't have to go back to school. Many of these nurses come to Canada on "nanny" type visas that require them to work for three years before getting their landed status. They then have to begin the process of applying for the RN education that is required.

Hi suzzane, thanks for your reply. nice to here that you grew up in Michigan, it's a nice place. my friend live there and i been there so many times for visit. Anyway, i took NCLEX-PN 2 years ago and got license. I didnt try to write canadian RN exam because it cost $$$ to do refresher course, thats why i did the RPN instead, and got license. About CGFNS i did try twice and sadly didn't pass. my friend told me to write CGFNS and then NCLEX RN to be license in Michigan, is that true? i want to try CGFNS again, but sometime i lost hope. is there any reviewer you could suggest for me to use? please help! i really want to move in USA as an RN, unlike here in canada I'm RPN and i cant do work as an RN. Please help me what to do, the quickest way to work in USA. sorry i got lots of question, i know your a good help because i read some of your

posts. Suzanne, is that right that California dont need CGFNS? just NCLEX. can you please tell me what state is the easiest to get working permit? and how true that, you could use your Michigan liscense in California. thanks so much.....

Michigan does require CGFNS exam, no way around it. There are many others states tha no longer require the exam, and you can endorse to other states afterwards. However, Michigan requires that you have at least five years experience in the US to not have to sit for the exam for them.

You cannot use your MI license in California, but you can get a California license. It will take you at least two to three years before you would be able to work in CA. To go to the East Coast where documents are processed out of Vermont would be much faster.

Which part of MI do your friends live in? Ohio only requires a credentials verification done by CGFNS, but not the exam. I recommend NY for most nurses, it is the easiest way to get everything done. They do all of the work for you, as there is a special Credentials Verification that is done by CGFNS for NY, you can look it up on the CGFNS website. You would also need the Visa Screen application and this can also be downloaded from CGFNS website. Then the only other thing that you would ned is the actual application from NY BON. This is the easiest for you to do since you are no longer in the Philippines.

Hope that this helps...................

Specializes in trauma, ortho, burns, plastic surgery.

Can you give more information regarding Ohio and NY? Thank you!

For NY you only need to complete the NY BON application, and from CGFNS website, the special credentials verification for NY, as well as the Visa Screen Application. Simple as that. Pay the money and CGFNS does the work for you.

I have details above in the stickies located at the top of the page. You can look at those for more info.

When you say your are an RPN, do you mean Registered Practical Nurse, or Registered Psychiatric Nurse? In BC, RPN means a psych nurse, but in other provinces can mean Practical Nurse.

RPN in Ontario means Registered Practical Nurse.

Whether it be an RN / RPN / secretary job the best and quickest way to get to Michigan is to apply for jobs in Michigan. When the hospital / company agrees to hire you they (the hospital) can help you get the working visa. It is much quicker to get to Michigan if you are being sponsored by an employer. I was born, and educated in Canada and came to Michigan over 10 years ago. Hope this info helps.
