What exactly does it mean? On top of (3) 12 hr shifts you work (2) more 12 hour shifts every other week?

It means you will rotate week-ends and holidays on your schedule.

It means that in a two week time period you will work two weekend shifts. eg.

week one - 3 (12's) all during the week

week two - 3 (12's) one in the week and 2 on the weekend.

It does not mean you end up working 5 (12's) ever other week.

I think it basically means you work every other weekend.

If there are a lot of people who work exclusively weekends, you might not actually have to work every other weekend, but they hire you with the understand that you might have to.
