Sorry I can't PM yet haven't quite met my post quota yet! Wondering how the conversation with GNA went today. Wasn't Ed Rynders one of the supporters of HB 1041? He is actually from my area.

Are you talking to me?

I spoke with Dr. Hatmaker with the GNA this evening. She said that they fully support EC, and that the GNA has been working "behind the scenes" with the GaBON to hopefully get everything worked out so that EC students can continue as they have been by endorsing in to GA.

She said that they are also compiling a list of EC students/graduates who might be seen as success stories, and who might want to represent EC students at the BON meeting in September, should it come to that. She said that she was optimistic that it might be solved using the behind the scenes method.

Anyone wishing to be included on her list of EC students/grads may contact her through the Georgia Nurses Association

Thanks so much. Hopefully something good will come out of all of this. I keep telling myself that we will prevail but I also have no faith in politics! It is just sickening to think that there is a very real possibilty that I have just spend several thousand dollars and worked my butt off for nothing.

I'm going to bet that there's a sideways way for you to "endorse in" should it come that that.

I sent an email to Dr. Hatmaker. I can only hope that my success story can help to change the BONs minds.

I'd be willing to bet that it wouldn't hurt! You're accomplishments are no small feat. I guess it takes an EC grad or current student to fully appreciate what you have done. After all, how long would some of those naysayers last in the Red Zone?

Most of Excelsior's problems with various states over the years appears to me to be at least partly related to BON members simply not understanding the program, or making decisions based on misinformation. After all, how can these EC students learn everything they need to know if they didn't go through nursing school the exact same way THEY did!

I agree with one of the above posts that there probably is a loophole of sorts that would allow EC grads to endorse in to GA. But that works for the short-term; aside from that, EC grads should be accepted without any loopholes or legal trickery. EC is NOT a second-rate program, and we can't allow it to be treated as such! EC's pass rates are comparable, if not better than the national and certain state averages:

NCLEX-RN Pass rates:

EC, 2003-2007: 88.72% (1)

Nationwide 2003-2007: 86.48 (1)

Georgia (public & private combined), 2003-2006: 87.42% (2)

Okay, my rant is over for now............

Ok, I get that they are saying clinical hours are a problem how ever I don't think that they realize how much more hands on experience lvns get in clinicals as opposed to bsn students . When I was doing clinicals we were doing skills when three year bsn students were not even giving meds.

I would like to see any Rn member of any state board pass the cpne.

If the people who made up these rules actually had to pass the cpne I bet they would think differently about Ec.

Also I wonder if there is any data behind their decision . Is there some rate of mistakes made by Ec grads as opposed to CC grads ?

Or is this just their over educated ignorant position ?

If I had to guess, this is just their ignorant position. Every EC nurse I have ever worked with has, IMO been above average. I think the misconception is that we take a few online tests and are handed a diploma. When you explain exactly what EC entails to someone who doesn't know, they are usually like, "wow," because they then see the hard work and dedication it takes to do this program. All of us who graduated from EC have years of extensive clinical experience as Paramedics, LPNs, etc. For most of us, EC was the only option we had to obtain our nursing degree, I know it was for me at the time. I live in Georgia now, but I am originally from Alabama, where the BON will not license a new grad EC nurse, but they will once you have a year or two of experience under you belt. In most cases when the boards make decisions like this, there are ways around it and there will be a way around this decision if it is not overturned.

You are right about the clinical part. I went through an 18 month lpn program and 12 of those months involved extensive clinical training such as initiating IVs, hanging IV fluids/meds, inserting NG tubes, tracheostomy care, suctioning of all kinds, insertion of urinary catherers, administering enemas, IM,SC, and ID injections, wound dressings/care (pretty much we were taught everything except hanging blood products because it is not in our scope of practice). All of this was in conjunction with book theory also. We were even taught how to do head to toe assessments. The the last month of lpn school was strictly clinical.

I think in this case it is clearly a case of misinformation on the BON and legislature part. In my opinion, there is no way that EC could qualify as a "diploma mill" because the nursing theory exam questions are along the lines of the NCLEX questions meaning that they require knowledge in a given area and tons of critical thinking. There's no way you can successfully complete these exams based on memorization.

Clinicals are the major point the GBON is stuck on...but all the EC grads I know work in the ER because of their former education as paramedics. We will start work with: PALS, ACLS, CPR, and already know how to start IV's and give IM injections..we have an ability to diagnose..(handy for triage) :)

Nurse externs that are right out of nursing school have little or no abilities.
