Stop by, introduce yourself, say a little about yourself. :)
Hi Y'all,
I'm an LPN for 4 yrs now. I've had a horrid experience in regular school. So now I've got issues with someone holding me back and telling me I can't continue. My options are to either do the straight Excelsior thing or I have a paid for scholarship thru RUE (via a friend who didn't do it and gave it to me) or an on-line course in one of our local colleges, which again I can pass or fail and be behind again! So.... I'm kinda mixed up on what to do. I've heard DON'T DO RUE!, BUT it is paid for?
I've heard Excelsior is too hard? The clinical is crazy? So.... would someone out-there with experience please give some guidance?
NansLpn - I am sorry to hear about your struggle! It seems so crazy that there is such a shortage of nurses, yet such dificulty getting an education to become one!!
I am not sure of where you live, and what the educational opportunities exist in your area. However, as an LPN for 4 years (also), I tried the Rue thing, and could not do it. I, at the age of 51, found that I need to have an instructor that I can ask questions from, and fellow students for study groups, etc., I am a better social and visual/hands-on learner, that I am at reading a book and taking a test (Rue). I signed a contract with Rue, and I am telling you that it was the longest period of my life, living up to that obligation of $125.00 a month, and no possible way out of the contract. (I even sought out an attorney). If you are that type of student who is self-disciplined, and can work on your own, it might be the right program for you. I ended joining a brand new accelerated RN program in my area (Akron, Ohio), and even that has been tough. I am at the tail end of the program, but have had to drop to PRN status in order to do it. I do have friends still attempting the Rue/Excelsior thing, with not much luck. One of them paid $325.00 for the CLEP test, and did not pass...she will need to pay again, and test again. For me, it was a financial and educational nightmare.
I hope you can find an LPN-RN bridge program, or a brand new RN program to enter into. If you feel you can do the RUE thing, that would be great. I hope I have been some help here. If not, and you have any further questions about Rue/Excelsior, let me know, and I will be glad to help. In the meantime, best of luck to you and your RN endeavors...I have faith that you can do whatever you set your mind to!!! Good luck. Keep us posted.

I am in CLeveland and have been taking classes via Distance Learning Systems and North Coast Tutoring Services. Outstanding so far. I am in A & P, it meets every Thursday from 5p -9p and there are only 10 ppl in the class. The teacher is wonderful and in that four hrs we really get a lot done. Along with class time, we also get homework in the form of reading or a worksheet/handout. We meet in Solon. I could not do this without a teacher or someone to hold me accountable either. A am greatful I found this program. Good Luck to you.

as long as you don't want a social life (ha, ha......what is a social life?), 20 hours a week should be ok, since you're children are older. i find that, as an older student, i'm able to concentrate more on what i need to, since many distractions are no longer there........good luck and god bless!
