in just a few hours!!!! :-D

Not looking forward to the drive, but it'll be worth it!

See ya'll in the morning!!!!!

That's cool Simmola I'll be up really early trying to get my little man ready for school...

Hey guys..in the cafeteria now. Recognized a couple of your names when she talked about campus choices.

Soo..lots of information so far. And LOTS of stuff to buy..sheesh...talk about expensive.

One thing I didn't realize was that I could get the chicken pox vaccine...for some reason I had it in my head that you had to be innoculated as a child, and I wasn't..and never had chicken pox..so I was worried about contracting it. Good thing I was wrong!!!!

Hey all,

I am graduating in the Spring with my bachelor degree in Gerontology. I am planning on applying soon for RN programs in hillsborough and surrounding counties. I am getting really worried that I will not be accepted though. My nursing pre-requisite GPA is around 3.7, but my overall GPA is only 2.7. I had an issue during my third year where I failed all my classes for one semester, but everything before and after that semester was A's and B's. I have taken more than just the pre-requisites, but I have also taken the electives, and some of the non-nursing courses you have to take along with your main nursing courses during the semester. Does anyone have any suggestions/ advice, or experience to share with me. It would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you,

Arianna

Hi everyone.

I have a few questions and I hope someone can help me. I am older, 42 and returning to school after 20 years. I never finished my college (AA) degree out of state but had almost enough credits to in liberal arts. When I was young I didn't care about school and my GPA reflects that. I am now starting my pre-reqs at HCC Dale Mabry in January. Took my placement test this week and I have to take remedial math (no surprise) but I am all set for reading and writing, I tested college level. Am I REQUIRED to submit those 20 year old grades? I don't want to because it will destroy my GPA and I don't have time (or money) to re-take all those classes I did poorly in 20 years ago. If I don't mention my prior schooling, will I be ok?

Also, are there older students during the day for those pre-req classes? Not that it matters much, I am fine being the oldster but would love it if I was not the only one.

Thanks in advance for any insight you all can share. Good luck to everyone! :)

ariannam702: As long as your nursing pre-req is above 3.7, then you should not have a problem. I believe the alternatives that go into the semester is below 3.7 (probably 3.3 and above). Maintain the 3.7 above is is you wanted a certain campus, you will have first priority due to GPA. They only count nursing pre-reqs.

mrsz1968: Just check to see if you have taken any of the nursing pre-reqs and if not, you should be okay if you get all A's from now on. If you have taken it before, I would just be honest and let advising know and plan a course of action. By the way, you are not that older than I am. I am 39 years old. I completed my BSEE many years ago and decided that I want to pursue nursing in case of the economy goes bad. If you did well on English and Math years ago, that would be one less course to take. Remember, they only count your GPA on pre-reqs.

Good luck to you two.

Thank you SO much! You've been a great help. :)

Bijin05 is correct. Just a few more things:

Ariannam702: HCC has the easiest pre-req requirements in the area. Some colleges require pre-reqs and then even after you have been accepted waitlist you for a year or two. I wouldn't even consider Galen or Keiser or any such thing unless absolutely necessary...my best friend got her LPN from Keiser for a very small sum of $22,000! :-P 3.7 is great, you will get in no matter which semester you apply for...HOWEVER....Spring semester usually has a lower cut off then Fall. For instance, Fall 2011's class had a cutoff of around 3.6, and from what I can tell our class, Spring 2012, had a cutoff around 3.4. So obviously the odds are a bit better in the spring.

mrsz1968: Unfortunately you do have to submit all of your transcripts, it might not matter much if it was a trade school, but if it was a major university or even a community college, you should do so. While I'm not guaranteeing that they would find some record of your prior attendence, there are several ways that school records are tracked, for instance facts.org, even background check and verification companies like EVerify, can delve into your schooling. There was one person in a previous year's post that I saw was denied a seat because all of her transcripts weren't turned in. She thought she was all set, then was notified that the school didn't receive her USF transcripts...which, if I remember correctly, she had attened something like 15 years ago.

If the grades were less than a C, you can retake the class with no penalty to your GPA. If they weren't less than a C, you still have some options. Especially when it comes to Math, a higher math will always take precedence over a lower one. So if, for instance, the first time you attended school, you took Intro to Math Applications or Math for Liberal Arts and received a C in it, you can't retake it, BUT you can take College Algebra and the Nursing program will take the College Algebra score over the lower math.

Lastly, if for some reason none of the above is applicable, while HCC is the most streamlined way to get into nursing, there are other schools not too distant such as St. Pete College, Pasco-Hernando Community College, etc.

And if any of THOSE aren't an option, you can get your LPN through Erwin Tech for around the same cost as HCC, and then apply for the transition program.

Lastly, my hubby is 40...and attending his second semester at HCC...so no worries on that score. In addition, there were several of the people I saw at nursing orientation today in the 35-55 years young age range, some with degrees, some with none, and all going through a career change.

Good luck to the both of you...doing all the preliminaries is hard, stressful, and sometimes discouraging...but in the end, from what I felt today, it is all worth it. Pursue all avenues, and by heavens...do NOT give up!

I think I am the youngest student and its kinda intimidating and exciting at the same time. :/ I am only 19 years old! Kinda makes me nervous, but im thrilled to meet a different assortment of people to work with!

I can't register classes online, it seems like the hold has been taken off. Any luck with anyone? Thank you.

Hi Bijin05, hopefully you were able to find out what was up with your registration situation by now, but if not, are you new to HCC, meaning, is Spring going to be your first semester? If so, you will have a registration hold on your account until the 21st. It is something all new students have.

If that is not the problem, then I dunno what the issue is, if you didn't get his email earlier, contact *******. He, hopefully, should be able to figure out what is going on!

To everyone that was hoping to switch campus assignments, I truly hope that Mrs. ********* (sp?) was able to help you out! Let us know what happens if you can, so that we can stop worrying for you...or support you in any decisions you have to make because she wasn't (knock on wood) able to help you!

I was able to register for classes last night after I got home from Orientation.

Kjbrown101-you will do awesome.

mrsz1968- I had to transfer credits from 18 years ago from Michigan. It brought down my GPA to a .7. (yes, that is not a typo, it was a 0.7) I thought I could be young, hang out with my friends, work full time evenings, and still get up and be to class at 8am. So, when I got serious about college, I basically had to start in the negative, because every class that I had taken, I had to take over (even if it wasn't nursing related, because it brought my GPA down so far). However, (I didn't know this at the time and wished someone had told me) the only thing they look at is the nursing pre-req's. Had I known that, I would've been a nurse already. (oh well)

Did anyone get to transfer to a different campus? I didn't hear of anyone, but was just wondering.

I know I talked to KiKB, she was sitting with Simmola, and I suspect I know who Kjbrown101 is.

RnNtrainng-I was looking for your sign! LOL
