Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

U.S.A. Florida

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

was the cut off gpa for last semester really 3.4?

Hi, that is what I heard from multiple people...but (not to scare anyone!) I have a good friend who got a letter saying she had an 'alternate' seat, even though her GPA was a 3.6. She didn't actually GET that seat and is now an applicant for the January start. If I were her, I would have gone to the Dean and fought it.

Yes, I have a friend in the admin department and was told it was about a 3.4 cut off for the Fall 2010 semester. I can't understand why someone did not get a seat with a 3.6, so I wonder what the applicant was counting compared to the nursing department... If you get denied you can always file a petition and if you can prove an error, from what I was told from my friend, you will be given the seat. I agree, I would have fought it if I had a 3.6 for the fall semester unless that was this girl's overall GPA. My overall GPA is much higher than the prereq requirement which is a 3.72 because a English class I took over 20 years ago....

I can't wait to get this applicant waiting period over with so I can get on with my life because I have some major decisions in my life to make.... I am getting to old to keep putting off nursing school!

I agree with you, I don't understand why she didn't get in either, but you may be right about her calculating her GPA. I didn't press her for more information because it was a very stressful time as you could imagine.

Anyway, I can't wait for the application period to be over too...I am not right out of high school either (lol) and would like to get busy in my career!

Hi Ladies,

I so wish I had found this group months ago! I too am an applicant for the Spring 2010 HCC nursing program and have been in agony since I submitted my application, the waiting is just brutal!!!

I was reading through your posts and noticed no one had spoken to Millie lately so I thought I would share what she told me today. She said that the committee will have met by the end of this week and she will be mailing out our letters by Monday!!!!! Based on the posts for the Fall 2010 group we could start receiving our letters on Tuesday!!!!

I am pretty confident that I will get in but I am still the suspense is killing me!

Who else has applied for the DM daytime program?

What is your GPA if you don't mind sharing. (mine is 4.0 in my pre-recs

Who else is doing this with children at home (I have two, a daughter-4 and a son-8 months)

Good luck to you all! I look forward to getting to know you all well over the next couple of years during this most amazing and yet challenging time.

I sure wish they would notify us by e-mail as well! What an idea!

Welcome! I sure hope she mails them Friday so that maybe we can get them on Saturday (and not have to go the whole weekend in suspense, lol)!

Hello Happymomma!

We all feel the same, the wait is brutal!

I too feel pretty confident I will be accepted unless for whatever reason I missed submitting something. So in that since I am not confident. In a prior post I mentioned I had a 3.73 GPA because of a Englsih class I got a C in over 20 years ago so I should be fine unless most people applying have your GPA..... Anyway I originally put PC as my first choice but I am hoping to change it to DM since my job is in South Tampa. I read that a lot of the hospitals for PC were east of PC so that would make my commute horrible on the days I work. I have a son that will be graduating from high school this school year, so unlike you I don't have major time commitments with my child.

Good Luck! I hope to be jumping up and down next week at this time!:yeah:

That would be sweet to receive something this weekend!

I just thought I'd put my two cents in...my friend started the nursing program at PC this semester and her hospital choices were S FL Baptist in PC, the hosp in Lakeland, and a nursing home in Tampa. Idk if those will be the same for those who start next semester though.

Thanks for the info!! A couple of those hospitals are fine; however my fear is that I may end up in Lakeland or more east. I live in PC so the campus is VERY close but my job is in South Tampa. I'm still trying to decide should I be given a chance to change my 1st campus choice. Where are you hoping to be? How does your friend like the program at PC, I like to hear what she thinks. At one point I read a lot of people were not happy but I think things may have changed a bit.
