I have an undergraduate Federal Perkins Loan (for a non-nursing bachelors degree), which has the benefit of being cancelled for RNs working full time.
I work per diem...and work full time hours being per diem. I called up my lender and explained the situation, and they said it doesn't matter that I am per diem. That all I needed to do was get a letter from HR with a full time employee job description on the hospital's letter head and submit that along with a copy of my nursing license and that's all they need. Well that and the application requesting cancellation.
I clarified this twice over the phone with the dude I was speaking with. Mostly because it seems kinda strange that all they want is a job description of a full time employee...even though technically I am not one. Seems a bit, I don't know, too easy?
I am not sure if HR will give me that, but it can't hurt to ask. And if they won't, I'll at least get a job description for a per diem RN and then submit copies of my pay stubs that show how many hours I've been working. Maybe that will be enough.
Has anyone here had their Perkins Loan cancelled for being a RN? What was your experience like?
Thanks for the information. I am not familiar with getting student loan, because I never had one. however, I am thinking about getting my BSN. I am a PD RN, so I do not get any benefits, including educational assistance, from my employer. It will be a good deal, if I can get this loan.
I would appreciate anyone who can answer a few questions.
Is this loan, easy to get?
Do they consider the total income of the household?
how do you apply?,
Thank you everyone for your response.
Mine has been deffered for this year, all had to do was take the form from the website have the guy in HR stamp with the form with the company letterhead and sign it, then I mailed the form in.
That was last spring when I was working full-time at one job, not sure what I will do now, becuase I am working part-time at one job and on-call at the other, but I average 50 hours a week between the two of them.
I am new to all of this, and was told about the Perkins Loan at the community college I applied for. They said they do not participate n federal student loans and would offer the Perkins Loan if full grant aid was not available to me. Is the Perkins Loan the best option then for a pre-nursing student? I am totally new to the financial aid process and I will not be working while going to school so I was considering a student loan to help. I did not know about loans being canceled after a time. Am I correct to assume that the Perkins Loan is forgiven after you graduate if you work as an RN?
Thank you for your help!

Another helpful website that should give information on all the loans you have ever taken out as a student is the National Student Loan Data System http://www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/ .
This is the primary national/government website where all your loans are in one central place so you can view them and manage them and figure out which ones you would like to consolidate.
Word of advice: If you are an RN and have a Perkins loan, DO NOT CONSOLIDATE it with your other loans (Direct Loans, Sallie Mae, etc.). The reason is because once you consolidate to one loan, you will not qualify for loan cancellation and you will not be able to have the loan waived after 5 years of working full time as an RN. Also, once you consolidate, there is no going back. So be careful!
