RNs who go to med school??

Nurses General Nursing

Published

how many nurses here either know someone or have actually gotten their LPN, RN, etc...and then went to medical school?

I know one. She's a great doctor. Got her BSN with the premed courses, worked as an RN, then went to medical school a few years later.

i know one, currently my next door neighbor is taking premed. I gave it some thought but decided on getting my CNM and NP instead. i think it better suits me.

I know a NICU nurse who got her MD. We all think that she's great.

thanks guys for the input. i always play with the idea, but i don't know how much harder it would really be than going to nursing school and then continuing on to be a NP. i know it's more than likely a different world, but it can't hurt to daydream about it!

The only real reason I wouldn't go for the MD is that it takes a lot longer to specialize. I only want to deliver babies and do well woman care so it makes more sense to me to get a CNM (eventually). I think being a nurse before becoming an MD gives you a real leg up because you've already learned how to deal with patients.

i completely agree about having 'a real leg up'--not only in regards to dealing with patients, but just having general background knowledge in medical terminology, pharmacology, etc...but with the time it takes to get an MD and comparing that to getting an NP (which is another option i'm definitely considering), it makes the NP look much better!

I know a few Md's who were Rn's prior to being doctors and they are all nightmare's to work with. If any little thing is not perfect with their patient they have little hissy fits. Its like they hold all nurses to a higher standard since they were nurses. The problem is when we ask them to go to bat with the suits for us they refuse with the excuse that they are doctors and should not get involved in nursing issues. Ironic how they can tell us how to be nurses but not want to get involved in nursing issues.

That's gonna make a pretty kickazz MD.

I, too, thought about it but decided to get my NP and PhD. Best decision I ever made.

I know an RN who eventually became an MD specializing in Anesthesiology.

I worked with an RN who went on to become a Physician's Assistant.

I also worked with a Pharmacist in our NICU who is now about to complete her stint in Medical School to obtain her MD.

I think all knowledge is good knowledge and should be used to help us as we grow. I was sad to hear of the MDs (in the post above) who hold nurses to a higher standard and yet won't go to bat for them with Administration issues... In my opinion, that's a fine example of someone not making the best use of their body of knowledge.

Sigh...

An awesome MD not at U of KS went to med school as an RN when she realized a lot of MDs weren't paying attention when her oncology patients complained of pain.

She now specializes in pain and psychiatry. She's done a number of studies with morphine gel for pressure wounds (including one strictly with women with large breasts), as well as morphine mixed with silver sulfadiazene for burn pts. She utilizes hypnosis in her practice as well. I can't imagine a better doc to work with.
