Depends on the shortage of nursing at the time, your grades and location. I know people who are in school now who have complete tuition, books and MORE than enough for living expenses, if budgeted correctly. This is through state and federal loans and grants. Mostly because of where they happened to be born. A scholarship for residents of a group of rural counties. It pays to look for less obvious sources of money.

I want to become an RN and I am a single unemployed mother of 1. I was told last night by a new aquaintance who is an RN that I can get money that pays for my school and books, but also gives me some money to pay my bills monthly while I go to school full time? CAN THIS BE TRUE? If any of you know how this works for single mothers please let me know as this would really help!Thank you!
There is also the national health services corps financial need based scholarships too, (application deadlines are in late spring I think). Check them out and good luck! Also, have you filled out your FAFSA yet? That will also let the school that you attend to possibly offer you scholarships and you may also qualify for pell grants and map grants and so on as well as student loans too.

I believe Florida has a program like you describe, but has long waiting lists to get into school. There are all kinds of qualifications and I think it's more for graduating high school students, but I don't know.
Single unemployed mothers can get all kinds of financial aid, and other thinigs, nursing school or not. If you want to be a nurse, there's no doubt you'll get plenty of money.

ask that new acquaintance for more details :)
Here in NY there is a program that pays tuition, books and supplies up to 4K/year (perfect for ADN). Its thru the state board of labor.
If you are receiving social services there are probably programs there as well. Can't hurt to ask!
Stay focused on your goal and it will become reality!
Check with your job services/unemployment office on a program called WIA. What your friend describes sounds a lot like that (though I don't know about the money to live on part). They pay for all school expenses, right down to pens and paper. If you qualify for WIA, chances are you'll qualify for other aid too, like Pell etc..which should certainly help you with living expenses.
Maryland has a program like that as well. There are 2 arms to it- the arm that does Books+Tuition and then the " Financial Need" arm where you get living expenses depending on your situation. You do have to repay your debt by working for the State in a high needs area once you are out of school.
There's a federal nursing scholarship program that pays your tuition, books, uniforms, insurance, equipment, etc. and pays you around $1200 per month while you're in school. It's based on need. If you have a zero EFC on your financial aid it places you in the top bracket. After that, it's just luck of the draw if you receive it. From what I understand they don't even consider GPA in choosing the recipients, which seems a little crazy to me. The only catch is that you have to work for a minimum of two years in a facility that has a critical shortage of nurses. If you google federal nursing scholarship it will come up. The application deadline for next year was in late May. I applied but haven't heard anything yet. I think they notify recipients in September.

This is the website the previous poster was describing. I applied but I forgot to send in my SAR (well didn't forget didn't realize they wanted a hard copy of it before the deadline). It would be worthwhile and goodluck to you!!!
Oh you have to be already enrolled or expected to be enrolled in a nursing program before they even accept the application. In the meantime, at the 2 year college I go to. The pell grant and the CAP (ky) was enough to cover my tuition and books. It didn't cover any other expenses but I worked on the weekends and it was tight but made it ok.
Again good luck...
