RN who has not worked in the field in 11 years

I was originally licensed in MN 11 years ago, and worked in long term care for about a year and a half. I was then offered an incredible job in the mortgage industry, and worked in that field until my son was born 8 years ago. He had a lot health problems, which have stabilized now, and I would like to go back to work in a prn or part time position. Is there anyone who would be willing to hire me? My license is still current, and I live in Denver.

I live in Colorado too and I just returned to work after a 7 year absence :) I have been working just over a month now.

May I ask what field you are in? Did you go back full time or part time? Did they spend a lot of time training you? Sorry for all of the questions...I am just trying to figure out where I should begin my search.

I think a better question here may be, do YOU feel SAFE going back into nursing after an 11 year leave? Have you completed any CE during this 11 years? That is a REALLY long time to be gone after only having 1.5 years of nursing experience anyway. I would want to go through a refresher course before I started looking for jobs. JMPO

Take a refresher course if you can! Many things have changed in the years since you have worked last.

Not just meds, but charting, wound care, theories!

Great your license is still valid

I would take a good refresher course - decide on a speciality and do the relevant certification.

This will update your knowledge plus boost confidence.

You may find you need to go back fulltime for a while to consolidate your skills

A lot of community colleges offer a "refresher" for RNs. One in our area offers this designed for RNs who haven't had acute care experience in a long time.

Denver is a really tight job market. You need to be competitive. In order to do that I think you need a refresher course. 11 yrs is a long time in the ever changing health care field.
