RN trained in Finland seeking NCLEX approval in the US

Published

Hello Everybody

I had my nursing education and current registration in Finland. I want to take NCLEX but I am not sure if I will get approval to write the exam without taking any additional courses to much the states or US standards. If there is anybody with Finnish nursing degree, please, share your experience in obtaining your licence in the US. My program was done in English and I wouldn't mind which ever state will give me approval to write the NCLEX, but I have Georgia and California in mind. Experiences with CGFNS will be welcome; how high they rate Finnish nursing education.

The only real way to find out is by applying. You are aware of the long wait ahead of you for a visa if a immigrant visa is required and you are the main applicant?

Yes, I am the main Applicant. I am a first year MPH (master of public health) candidate in Canada.

Specializes in Cardio-Pulmonary/Telemetry.

Hi

I stdied in Finland too and I am licensed in Ohio, Texas and California. I went through the CGFNS route and everything went ok. I didnt have to take any classes to supplement my previous education. My Bacheleors degree from Finland was sufficient.

I would recommend you go through Vermont for your initial licensure, the process is a lot smoother and less stressful and then once you pass the NCLEX and get your licesne, you can endorse to California or Georgia.

Let me know if you need more help

Thanks

Your bigger issue will be the very long wait for a GC.

Hi Kiki75,

Thank you for sharing your personal experience and your advice. How long, on average, does it take for one to get approval to take NCLEX? I have been reading about the nursing jobs in the US. Is it difficult for RN to find jobs in the US? where in Finland did you have your nursing training?

Hi caroladybelle

Thank you.

What is the meaning of GC?

Hi caroladybelle

Thank you.

What is the meaning of GC?

Green card.

Getting permit to take the NCLEX, is the smallest part of the journey.

Getting a green card (if you are not a US citizen) or a visa that permits you to legally work in the US is much harder, and a longer wait. Due to retrogression, many immigrants are waiting 5 years or more.

There is also a large surplus of US nurses without jobs due to the recession/poor economy, so few employers are willing/legally able to sponsor noncitizen nurses for alternate work permits.

Hi there,

So nice to hear from you all! :) I was also trained in Finland and now in the process of getting my license in CA. It hasn't gone too smoothly though.. I was told I need to take the course in OB. Now I'm reviewing my options..

Kiki, when did you graduate if you don't mind me asking? The reason why I'm asking is that I'm curious to know if you graduated from a university of applied sciences (polytechnic).

Good luck to you all!

I graduated too in Finland, i got evaluated with ERES cause i moved to Texas, how has your process been for you guys? im yet to study for NCLEX which im so worried, please share your experiences if you guys are through with the process.
