RN Student in NYC and wants to take the LVN/LPN Board in California

Published

Hi everyone! I was just wondering if it's possible for me to take the LPN/LVN board exam. I am a RN student in NYC in an ADN program, and I am almost done -I'll be graduating in June of 2010 (only IF I PASS the remaining courses). As far as I know from reading the other threads, NYC and NJ don't allow RN students to take the LVN/LPN boards anymore -but some states still do. Now my question is, since other states still let you take that exam... Is is it possible for me to take the LPN/LVN boards in California eventho I am a RN student in NYC? Btw, my 3 semesters consisted of 1st sem: funda, 2nd sem: med-surg & peds and psych w/o clinicals, 3rd sem: med-surg & OB. The last semester will consists of: med-surg, psych, & community health nursing. The reason why I'm asking is because, I know that once you get your degree, you are eligible to take the board exam whichever state you wanna practice your nursing... I was wondering if the same thing applies for RN students who wants to get more experience by doing a LPN/LVN sideline. Also, just a back-up plan because if you failed in the program and decided to transfer to another school, none of the nursing credits will be given credit for and thus will have to start from the beginning.

I hope to get a response from anyone who has a knowledge about this. Thank you all in advance!

I would go to the California Board of Nursing site and do some investigating. I did find this specifically for applying for LVN licensure in CA (the CA state website for LVN's/Psych Tech's) http://www.bvnpt.ca.gov/summary_vn.shtml It looks like Method 3 would be your only option - and that will only work if the classes you've taken are accepted by them. You would still need to take the LPN/LVN NCLEX, pay all the fees, pass background checks, etc.

Are you planning on moving to California to live & work at some point?

Thank you so much for the information you've provided! I would call them up after my finals, and see if I am eligible for this. I kinda doubt that I am just because I only had 3-4weeks of each maternity & pediatrics nursing in the clinical setting -but maybe the hours would be enough. I honestly don't mind taking the NCLEX exams, I just hope I am legit enough to take the exam itself.

Yes I do have plans moving to California -maybe when I graduate and stay there for a couple of years but definitely would go back to New York at some point.
