RN student - can I challenge the LVN/LPN NCLEX?

Published

Hello Nurses!

I have just recently failed my fourth semester as an RN student at a community college here in CALIFORNIA.

I would like to take LVN boards so I can work in the summer while waiting to get back in to RN program again in the fall so I can graduate already.

Since I have finished three semesters already, am I qualified to take the NCLEX LVN here in CALIFORNIA?

What do I need to do to apply to take the NCLEX?

How long does it take for the boards to notify you when you can take the test?

How long does it take to receive your test results?

I have so many questions, and I apologize for that.

But I've been so stressed out after failing that I don't know what to do.

I appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks you guys!

were u able to sit in for the LPN NCLEX? What did u do? I have the same situation so im praying that u have good news to share

i believe that you can in depend on the state. good luck to you.

what i would like to know if anyone knows; is if there is any way an EMT can challenge the nclex-pn boards with out taking any lvn classes in the state of CA?

I checked the BVNPT website for your question and found the answer: no. You can find this answer at: http://www.bvnpt.ca.gov/method3.htm. It is a link off the main BVNPT website. About half way down the page, in the paragraph with Please Note in bold letters, several jobs that are excluded are listed, including field EMT and paramedic. So both can not use the Method 3 option. Makes no sense to me that a CNA can do this but a paramedic can't. Read the link about method 3 and you will see what the board is considering 51 months of paid bedside experience (acute care hospital). Sorry about this. I don't agree with this.

hi! i'm a former rn student from a community college here in new york and i would like to know if i qualify for the nclex-pn exam.

i only had a semester in the program. i have taken 2 basic courses which are fundamental skills and nursing process. also a little of med surg and psychosocial adaptation.

i doubt that i am qualified but who knows...

i have been searching all over the net but i couldn't find an answer regarding my situation.

so i hope somebody here has the answer. :nuke:

A school needs to award you an ATT - authorization to test. I doubt you will qualify.

DEAR STUDENT: WAS IN SIMILAR SITUATION. MY PROCTOR FELT I SHOULD STEP INTO THE LPN PROGRAM, WHICH IS USEFUL BUT NOT WHAT

I WANTED TO DO. WHEN WRITING THE NCLEX YOU MUST THINK AND

RESPOND AS A LPN NOT RN. THIS IS A VALUABLE LESSON. WHEN WORKING ON THE FLOOR YOU MUST THINK LIKE A LPN NOT A RN OR HUGE PROBLEMS WILL ARISE. BEST ADVICE FROM ONE WHO WAS THERE IS TO

TAKE THE TIME TO STUDY THE RN NCLEX AND FORGET THE LPN. I NEVER

WENT BACK AND AM NOW IN MY 50'S CONSIDERING THE UPGRADING. ALSO NOTE THAT THE FUTURE OF THE OLD LPN REQUIRES UPGRADING ANYWAY. STUDY, YOU CAN AND WILL DO JUST FINE. NURSE NANCY:heartbeat

P.S. I THINK YOU CAN AND SHOULD CHALLENGE THE EXAM, STUDY

New York used to allow RN students that completed up to at least pediatrics and women's health before allowing one to sit for NCLEX-PN. Since June, 2007, they stopped this option, only allowing for the RN graduate to sit for NCLEX-PN after completing the entire RN program-which, essentially makes little sense since after graduation, you would be eligible to sit for what you worked for. It was felt that for one, RNs are taught differently, and also, that there are portions of the exam that may not be covered by the time the RN students have not covered in their program as of yet-I am assuming some of the disease processes that would be covered in Med-Surg 2.

I am a RN (ADN) but , I am interested to apply for a recent LPN opening position in a hospital looking forward to fill a future open RN position with the Hospital. Could I fill a position as a LPN with a RN license? :nurse:

Not sure, but I don't think so. You would need an active LPN license, I believe. They have created this position in the budget for an LPN, and whomever works there would have to have the correct prudentials. Of course, you would have more than the LPN, but no license for it, so, I am not sure.

It was my experience that once you reach a certain level you can not practice below your scope. Ask the hospital or check with the BON to be sure though.

I know people that maintain both licenses. And I keep referring to a friend of mine who used to be an LPN that told me when she was an LPN, she saw all of these wonderful, interesting opportunities that only applied to RNs. Eventually, she got it, and then, she said that she suddenly started seeing many jobs she would like to work at that only wanted LPNs...go figure! She didn't maintain both, but I know some that do. A guy that attended the RN program at my school told me he plans to maintain both. He understands that he would be held accountable for the higher license if the poo hits the fan, but he likes to do home care cases where he can stay with one client at home. He said that if he worked for that agency as an RN, he would 'have to do more' and he 'does enough as an RN working in ICU'.

Oh, well, to each his own, huh? LOL...
