Hello-

I've heard some clinics have RNs mixing Chemo. Is this within the Nursing Scope? Is there a website I could go to to support this idea that it's legal for nursing to mix chemo in stand alone clinic in California?

Thank you in advance.

In both areas I've worked in; outpatient and inpatient Oncology, the pharmacist mixes the chemotherapy. They have special precautions that they follow, including mixing under a hood. Pharmacy even primes our chemo lines, so that it isn't done on the floor. I have never heard of nurses mixing chemotherapy and even if it is legal, I wouldn't want that added responsibility.

You could look at the ONS website or call your state BON or Board of Pharmacists.

I would suggest checking with your State BON as well. I've mixed lots of drugs, as we don't have 24/7 pharmacy available. But I don't know about chemo. When I've administered chemo, it has been mixed in the pharmacy.

Chemotherapy drugs almost all MUST be mixed under a hood.

in my hospital, way back probably before i was even in college, the nurses would prep the chemo in our med room. fast forward x amount of years our pharmacy preps/mixes and primes the tubing for our chemo.

This is a must read too! You must completely understand and follow USP 797

I suspect that you can but I also suspect that this allows them to save some bucks and not hire a pharmacist which you will see the importance of after you read the two links..the risk is great and worse than originally expected!
