RN school wait lists in BC

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

Hi again lovejasper :) Welcome! Where are you if not in Canada? you are right that you need to take Libs 7002 and HMGT 7180 and you will also need to take 6 credits of Liberal studies electives....unless you have something that transfers. I personally took 2 philosophy courses, but there are many options for fulfilling the elective requirement and more detailed info can be found here:

http://www.bcit.ca/study/credentials/bachelors/liberalstudies.shtml

If you want to take your electives somewhere other than BCIT, you need to fill out a request for approval.

nvan604- WAHOOO!!! that is great news. congrats. hopefully you get in and if you actually live in nvan, we can carpool :)

Karly- thanks for the book info! I am eager to get reading!

As for the CPR, it must be current for the term and they require us to renew every year, so if yours is more than a year old, you should go ahead and renew. The link for WHIMIS will be emailed to us at some point.

Hi everyone,

I'm on the hold list for Jan intake ,but I am guaranteed a place for August. So,I think I'll difer to August and meanwhile I'll take LIBS 7001 ,LIBS 7002.

What is the best way of taking them on-line or on campus?Easy/Difficult?Any suggestions?

Hey Smiley, for sure you have a good advice!!!

I know I talk too much on this forum..sorry:o....Hi Vi_Li!

I took 7001 online last term pretty easy, just a lot of reading... and I am in 7002 right now online...not as easy. In 7002, there is a lot to talk about as it deals with morals, values and ethics etc so I would suggest taking that one in class if you can. What do you guys think?

Thank you for your answer Smiley65. YOu are Awesome!! I am from Korea(holding a PR) but I am currently living in MI USA. I moved here 2months ago but I have to move again! I am worried that my case is little bit complicated to transfer my credit..because I hold Korean univ. BA...

Anyway I am planning to move first of January so I cant see you guys at orientation but looking forward to meet everybody at the first class!!

Whoever on the hold list, Good luck to you guys!!

Thanks,Smiley.Your advices are always appropriate and valuable.I really appreciate your quick feed-back on both sites.

Just got approved for my student loan today!!! Getting so excited to meet all of you :) Yay!

ps. Everyone should wear their user names on their name tags :)

Thats awesome Ireid :) I think we should all have an "all nurses" celebratory drink (or coffee/tea/juice/ etc) at Professor Mugs :) or somewhere local.... I feel like we've already been through alot together, with the whole application process.

^^ Agreed!

I called enrollment today and they sorted out my account summary woohoo! I leave the country tommorrow for a month vacation (yay) so talk to you guys soon! goodluck to everyone :)

a whole month vacay?! luck- eee!! should be good. be safe

Hi smiley i just have a question for you about libs 7001! i thinking of deferring a year like Vi Li to get all the extra courses out of the way. and was just wondering how long it took you to finish libs 7001? Is it a course that will take the whole semester or can u just really work at it and have in done in a month or two?

Hey nvan604- First off I think you can only differ to the next intake (which would be August) but I think that's what you meant :) Second- Libs 7001 is available online, however it is not a "self paced" course. In fact, very few courses at the University level are self paced. That means that you have specific deadlines each week for assignments and readings, and weekly online discussion forums to participate in, which makes it impossible to finish whenever you want. Libs 7001 is also quite a bit of work, so it would be hard to complete it in less than 1 semester, even if that were allowed. What courses do you have left as far as 'extra courses'? Libs 7001 is NOT a pre requisite for Libs 7002, so you can take both of these at the same time. All of the courses in the Nursing Program, including the self scheduled ones, will last for the duration of 1 semester.

Hey Smiley,I'm thinking of taking LIBS7001 on-line and LIBS7002 in-class during the Spring semester.I have Engl 1100 and Psyc 1100 taken at Kwantlen(I loved taking them there). So,I want to take Psyc 1200 at Kwantlen as well.Do you have any idea what LIBS selective courses can be taken at Kwantlen and are transferable to BCIT?Maybe, I could take all of them in the Summer semester.
