RN school wait lists in BC

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

Hi Vi_Li-I dont know much about Kwantlen as I took all of my self scheduled classes through Cap U, however regarding the Libs elective requirements:

They must both be at the 200 level or higher

If taken outside of BCIT there is a form you need to fill out HOWEVER, generally speaking if you choose your electives from these program lists, you should be safe....try to find one that you can start at a 200 level so you don't need to end up taking 3 to meet the requirement.

Anthropology

Art History

Canadian Studies

Classical Studies

Cultural Studies

English

History

Humanities

Literature

Music History

Native Studies

Philosophy

Political Science

Psychology

Religious Studies

Sociology

Theology

Women’s Studies

So what you should do is select the courses (in these subjects if not from BCIT liberal studies options) and then fill out the form here

http://www.bcit.ca/files/admission/pdf/libs_electives_form.pdf

Once your courses have been approved, you can register! If you are planning to defer, keep in mind that registration for winter semester (also Jan 9 start date at Kwantlen) opens soon, so you might want to get this started. It may take a bit of time to process.

If you take your 2nd Psych and the 2 Libs plus 2 electives, that would be 5 courses, so that all depends on your personal schedule.

Smiley, thanks a lot for your help!!!I'm thinking of taking these courses in two semesters:Spring-LIBS7001,LIBS7002 at BCIT and Summer-Psyc1200,LIBS Electives at Kwantlen.I hope I can manage this load

you're welcome :) so when do you have to give notice of your decision to defer? I'm sure you will do fine with the course load...it will warm you up for the 9 courses scheduled for level 1 of the Nursing program:dzed:

Smiley your great!! soo happy I found this page :) but yes I meant aug intake, I think the stressing out of all these months has messed with my brain!! I have both psychs and the English course, but unfortunately all my other courses from UVIC wont transfer, so that leaves me with the two required libs classes as well as the extra 6.0 credits needed! Decisions decisions, I have no idea if I should defer or not :S

Well really, 5 self scheduled courses (Including Canadian Health Care) is not that bad considering you have 2 summers to complete them...If you start in January, you could take 2 each summer, and 1 during level 2 or 3... or 5 in one summer and still have 1 off....technically we signed up for a "year round" program, so having to do a couple online courses over the summer shouldn't deter you from starting this Jan.....Especially when the extra 6 credits of electives can be in a course that you have interest in....however, if you decide to defer, getting a few of those courses out of the way before you start would free up some time for working if you need to that, or give you a much needed break between levels. Isn't tuition deadline today? When do you guys have to decide by?

Officially we are not in the program yet.Nothing about payment was mentioned in the the letter I received.Am I right nvan604,becka?Did you receive anything?

oh, I see... but you have a solid spot for Aug if nothing comes up?

yes, we are in 100% for august, but there's a good chance we'll start in Jan. so we dont have to pay anything till they phone, and can defer at anytime if we don't want to stay on the hold list!

nice :) so you don't have a deadline to decide if you want to defer....until the phone rings:yeah:

looking forward to orientation...the list of questions keeps growing :)

Haven't heard anything yet! The commitment fee was due yesterday right? So I'm sure they'll start making calls soon! I hope..

Hey Northvan604. I received the same email WOOHOOO! I also went to UVIC too.. small world.

Have you replied to say if you are going to defer to AUGUST 2012 or stay on the holdlist.

I am not sure if my UVIC courses transfer, how can i double check that?

Also-- are you going to the orientation?
