RN school wait lists in BC

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

I know I talk too much on this forum..sorry:o....Hi Vi_Li!

I took 7001 online last term pretty easy, just a lot of reading... and I am in 7002 right now online...not as easy. In 7002, there is a lot to talk about as it deals with morals, values and ethics etc so I would suggest taking that one in class if you can. What do you guys think?

Sorry,I found your message regarding LIBS.

Thanks.

Vi- lol :) no worries.

boyish-I was considering waiting as well...I just want to get everything started :)

do you guys know if we have to get all our shots done before dec. 2 when the immunization form is due? This is for bcit..i'm so confuseed >

Hi fatpapaya :) The form with complete immunization history is due on the 2nd. Any outstanding shots will be scheduled by student health services within the first week of class. At least that's what I understand from my meeting with them.

I gave my immunization form to BCIT in person yesterday fatpapaya. They told me it just had to be filled out, it's fine if you don't have all the shots. You need to get a hep-b screen done and submit the lab results with the form though. I suggest submitting what you have early so you can have any problems sorted out.

Bahh.. All I can find is records of Hep A imunization which isn't even required. And then a Report of Immunization for Hep B but not the sheet with actual dates other then the first immunization... Should I just go to my doctor to sort it all out or...?

Regardless of when you got your hep-b shots, I think they need the results of the hep-b antibody tests so you should probably go to your doctor and get that done first and bring a copy of that with you to BCIT. The nurse there will go over your form again and if you need any shots they will give them to you when the school year starts, so you probably don't need to get any vaccinations from your doctor.

When I took mine in I had no record of hep b so they wrote me a requisition to take to any hospital to get levels checked. The hospital said they would fax the results to BCIT.

Awesome guys, thanks a lot. I've booked an appointment. I really wish the book list came out earlier I want to start ordering the books! I've looked at the Aug intake book list, i'm assuming it will probably be very similar if not almost the same.

if you are really wanting to purchase books now, go ahead based on that Aug intake list. The textbooks have been the same for many, many terms :) i recommend buying the Jarvis assessment book ASAP. you'll have pre-readings assigned at orientation to complete before school starts.

I was going to buy the jarvis assessment book (2009 ed) on amazon but I noticed the 2011 edition just came out. I wonder if they'll switch to that edition.

Thanks guys!!! I really appreciated it! :)
