RN school wait lists in BC

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

Hey Karly- I haven't ordered any books yet. Still checking out the options. Amazon.com can NOT ship most of them, Amazon.ca can....but I guess the ones I chose were coming from 5 different places so overall, I would only save 30 bucks...Having some luck with craigslist...but will probably just go to the bookstore...I know some of the versions have been updated since last intake. Nice that you got all of your shots done!

Chhun3- I had a 4.0 in 63 university credits- 5/7 lib requirements (am currently completing Libs 7002), about 85 avg in high school requirements, about 50 volunteer hours in a hospital, and life experience. good luck with your application!

I know I had that problem with amazon as well... I actually have to drive down to the states to pick them all up so that's a little annoying but I did find it to be a lot cheaper this way...

Chhun3 - I don't have any of the electives done, but I did have 62 university credits and I'm hoping at least 2 of them will be given transfer credit. Also, I spent the last year working full time at a retirement home and that's about it.

That is a good idea...did you manage to find them all from 1 source? or do you have to drive all over the place?

I just got them all shipped to my girlfriends P.O box in Blaine. So at least just one shop and hopefully no border trouble lol.

My friend has a bit of an online shopping addiction and in this case it worked out pretty well for me. Except I can't seem to find those two books any cheaper... Almost $400 for 2 textbooks.. Ouch.

Thanks a lot smiley65. I was also wondering what nursing supplies do you need for the program aside from scrubs? Stethoscope? Sphygmomanometer? Do you purchase these own your own or does BCIT supply them?

I just signed up for a Kinek account so I can get stuff sent from the US pretty much to the border... Since I'm flying out of Bellingham to Disneyland next week, this should work...saves me about 100 bucks and I'm a little nervous to get them sent to this address...

I am also curious why we don't have a patho book listed...

I forgot the name of the patho book but you can find it under the BHSC section of the BCIT bookstore's website. It isn't under the nursing program selection.

what does amazon.com say exactly? i'm interested to know why you guys can't ship from .com, as i would say most of my classmates order from .com (as .ca is more expensive, even when paying for shipping). i've never had a problem shipping textbooks to canada, for this degree or my previous one.

Amazon.com says "we cannot ship to your location" I wonder if it's b/c I was looking at used ones from independent sellers and not the amazon warehouse..?.From the amazon warehouse, only new ones were available and the savings were not that big.

If patho is in the nursing program, I wonder why the book wouldn't be listed with all of the other ones...
