RN school wait lists in BC

World Canada CA Programs

Published

First off, hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and stumbled on it while spending hours trying to research my alternatives.

I'm in Vancouver, BC (permanent resident) planning to go for my RN. I'm a mature student with 19 credit hours from a US university, but most of those credits are liberal arts, so I'm not sure what will really count except for the math and English. I know I'll have to take the A&Ps and Psychs- biology was much more than 5 years ago, but I did make an A! lol

When I first started looking, I found that VCC has a relatively new RN BSN program and I spoke to the academic advisers who told me that there was no wait list. I got approved for my student loan, requested all my transcripts and registered as a student. Today (only a week later) I spoke with a different adviser who informed me that not only is there a wait list, but that there are 49 students on it and that they will only be taking 24. VCC only has a fall intake so she told me that if I'm "lucky" I could get in the class of 2012 but likely 2013! ack. I suppose the only positive there is that they are a first come, first serve school so I will eventually move up the list for sure.

In the meantime, the adviser suggested I apply to multiple schools in the Lower Mainland, and choose one to attend for prerequisites while biding my time, hoping for one of them to eventually send me an acceptance. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I applied to Douglas and will probably actually attend there because it is much closer to home than VCC, plus they do two intakes per year so that's a plus. Will anyone be attending the Douglas psych or A&P for summer 2011? Would be nice to know someone going in.

So I guess the purpose of my post is to first make contact with anyone else currently waiting out their time, and also to compare any up-to-date info you have on wait lists. As far as Douglas' preferential placement goes, with a max number of points at 14, what is a "good" number of points to have to be competitive? I'm thinking I will have around 8. >

Thanks for reading!

Hey Charis8. I received the same email. & I have not heard from them yet...I'm wondering the same thing, about how many people got the email saying they were at the top of the hold list...because I know they hold list is usually like 140ish people? No? But since we're at the top, do you think it means like top 10? or higher, as in we're pretty much next ie. top 3? I guess we will see how many people at orientation are on the hold list. I wonder what are chances of starting in January are. Has anyone heard from previous years what the seat offer rate is for being at the top of the hold list? It must be pretty good considering they want us at orientation.

Also, does anyone know what the schedule is like? Not during the week, because the email specified what days you're in class vs clinical & the times. But when do we get time off, like is it two weeks between terms? do we ever get a month off at any point? etc.

Hi -martha-,

I received the same message a month ago and I decided to difer to August intake and complete LIBS courses.I have no idea how many people are on the top of the list, but definitely one down:me :)

Good luck!!!

Hey again!

So I just went and finished getting my books (ouch$) and was wondering about what you guys think of the drug cards?? I think there were two kinds at the bookstore, Mosby's and Mediquick(?). I'm a flash card lover so I was definitely intrigued by these and when I was flipping thru them the backs were just covered in information. What do you guys think? They had lots of little flip books for quick info which I was also thought could be useful.

Good luck to everyone with the 20 or so chapters of pre reading lol.

I have been told by the students selling me their books that we will need drug cards for clinical. Either you buy them at the bookstore or write up your own every week...I am buying some for sure. I know a girl selling hers if you want the info. As for pre-reading, that's the pre reading for the whole term :) its up to you if you want to do it all now or each week, but they will tell us more at orientation :) I have a big final tomorrow but have started on chapter 1 anyways...too excited to wait. Lol

hi guys - is your prereading from the Jarvis assessment book? (not sure if they have added prereading for other courses since I was in level one). If so, that prereading is for your assessment course, which is only for the first 5-6 weeks of term. i would without a doubt recommend doing that now! they expect you to come knowing the information and ready to do stuff, so i found it a lot easier to preread and then just review notes the night before. Also, your final for that course comes so quickly (week 5 or 6) so you don't want to get behind :)

re: those flip books...I would recommend not buying them, at least until you are further in the program. they tend to have sooo much info that it's hard to find what you need for your specific rotation and shift. i would save yourself the money for now :) Med cards are really up to your personality and learning style - some people prefer to write them as it helps them learn

Oooh thanks jasn! I didn't actually realize this one was only 6 weeks... pretty pricey book for such a short course :( yes it is Jarvis.... We will also have pre reading for another course all online - for NURS1020-week one pre reading, worksheets, andquestionson medical asepsis.

Hi guys! Just wondering where did you guys go for your CPR-HCP certification?

Hey MISTEE, I did mine through St.Johns' Ambulance. If you check the website, they have many locations so you should be able to find something close to home :) it cost 80 bucks including the book.

hey guys! almost time for orientation! = )

just wondering for those going into bcit, are we suppose to preread ALL of the jarvis textbook? In addition, we have to pre-read the online stuff from the websites they provided? If so, then thats insane cause that textbook is hugeeeeeeeeeeeeee

They sent out a reading list saying what chapters we have to read in the Jarvis textbook.. They omit some stuff but yeah, it's quite a bit!!

Yeah the bcit pre-reading is long but still quite manageable. There's a lot of pictures so it's not all blocks of text.

Anyway, I'm excited for classes to start =)

has anyone done the FIT testing yet?
