I live in the Tampa bay area and have been a LPN for 2 years. I just recently failed the RN exam for the third time!
Was wondering if anyone had any information on the board approved remedial courses and which ones are better than others?? As well as any advice on what I need to do to pass this thing. Graduated RN school with a GPA of 3.5 but cannot seem to pass this test! HELP!!!

Welcome to allnurses. Don't know anything about the remedial courses, but you can get help by following Suzanne4's plan. Get the latest copy of Saunders NCLEX book with CD and use this to study. There is a sticky by Suzanne4 at the top of the NCLEX forum. Read and follow this sticky. Many people who have failed several times have followed her plan and passed. Good luck to you. And don't give up!!

Best bet is to check directly with them to find out exactly what they want you to do. Different states have different requirements. They may require that you go thru a program before they will permit you to sit for the exam again.
As for preparing, follow what the above poster wrote. Check out the NCLEX Discussion Forum.

There is an NCLEX Remediation and Nurse Re-entry program online but you have to arrange clinical with someone locally. Expensive though at around 2 grand. www.valenciaenterprises.org/health
It's a good program and can do pretty much at your pace. It is in Fl and is Fl BON approved.

Hi, Nurse1333
A high GPA doesn't really mean anything when it comes to taking the NCLEX. NCLEX doesn't test only your knowledge base but also how well you can apply your critical thinking skills in any given scenario. They want to see that you know how to maintain safety, how to prioritize, when to delegate, etc., so you have to go into the exam knowing how to interpret the questions correctly.
Many community colleges offer RN refresher/remedial courses. There is a list of these programs available from the Florida BON for people who do not the NCLEX after (I think) three attempts. I keep reading rave reviews here about Suzanne4's NCLEX prep course from people who've actually done it and passed so that's definitely worth looking into as well.

Hi
I Know exactly how you feel. When I took The NCLEX EXAM, I didn't expect it to be so Difficult, But it was. It was BRUTAL!!! Nothing was straightforward or easy, they twisted & turned every question around to confuse & trick you. Kaplan offers an EXCELLENT Preparation course for The NCLEX EXAM. The RN complete costs $449, & is money well spent.
I reside in San Diego, CA & it prepared me really well for The Board. You attend class for 8 days, for 3.5 hours a day at a Kaplan Center, and you get online practice exams to help prepare you. The Q-Bank has over 2,000 Nclex style questions, & The Q-Trainer is over 1,000 NCLEX style questions. It really does prepare you. On the First day of class, you will be given a 180 question Diagnostic test to measure how well you will do on the exam. The score will be in the Pass Range, Borderline, & Non Pass Range. On the 7th day of class, you will take the 180 Question Readiness Exam to see how prepared for the actual NCLEX EXAM. The instructor will go over the exam on the last day of class. If you fail the NCLEX exam after taking the KAPLAN course, KAPLAN will allow you to take the whole thing over again, FREE of charge. They also have resources & study materials with rationales to review. It was worth "EVERY PENNY", & I couldn't have passed without taking this Prep Course. Their website is www.kaplan.com.
I Hope you find this info helpful! Don't give up, & Good Luck on your next exam.

Be very careful! The Board will have to issue a letter allowing you to take a REMEDIAL course. They do not accept the term refresher. I am trying to get my (RN) license back after 14 years off raising a family. I never failed, never had any disciplinary action. You must choose from the Board approved list of courses. Many of the courses (like the one in St. Pete) require you to find your own clinical before you can register. Even if you are willing to drive out of county, some will not take students from out of their area. It is very hard to find your own clinical due to risk management concerns on the part of the hospital. I went to a hearing in Tampa in June. Remedial encompasses many issues including Drug/alcohol,criminal ,DUI, malpractice. If you are assigned a hearing date, please attend! It is an eye-opener. I hope this info helps you. I have learned this over a 6-month period. I am still looking for a clinical agreement so I can take the course!

Hi there,
I am in the same boat as you. My license are null/void since 1997. I had a GA license which expired in 2010, BUT i haven't worked since 2004. So i need the "refresher". I have submitted everything to the board, got the go. They told me the office would not approve the license due to me working, and "most likely" would require the course. Board don't meet again until Aug 2012. Said I should go ahead and take the course and get it out of the way. Capscare, is on the FL BON approved list. 1350.00 Online theory/clinical. Capscare stated they have a contract with a facility, Sacred Heart Hospital, here in Pensacola, FL, for me to do my 96 hrs in clinicals. I did not confirm with the hospital before forking out the money, if they indeed had a contract. I was just glad I didn't have to drive 12 hrs south, for I live in the Panhandle. I hope I have not been taken for a ride with that much money. And I hope i have not jumped ahead of the board by not waiting to receive exact directon from them. Thanks for listening.
