RN Programs in Tampa

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello.

I have been searching all these threads to only become more confused and slightly insecured. Some of these threads are over 2 years old. Not sure if the information there is still valid. I have been an MA for over 10 yrs in Tampa and would like to go back to school and get my RN.

I have heard of some schools out there are good, but would only be for day classes. I know trying to find a RN program for evening/weekend classes is almost close to impossible. I have to keep my day job and changing that could not be an option for me unfornunately. :(

Anyone out there that has any information that can help? What schools out there (if any) for evenings? Maybe a student or has graduated? Any feed back would be great.

Thank you!

Where are you in prereqs? Do you have A&P, Micro, College Algebra, etc done?

That said, Hillsborough Community College in Tampa has a night program. Why more schools don't have Night programs is silly to me. However their Spring 2013 application deadline just passed on June 1. HCC has become my #1 choice I will say because of their Night program, that's for sure.

So, your options would be to:

a) work on prereqs for Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 if you need to and apply for Spring 2014 at HCC, OR if you're willing,

b) Go to LPN school first which would reduce your time in RN school, as I believe people that apply to LPN-RN bridge programs are auto accepted; I think. Your best LPN option I think would be PTEC (myptec.org) in Pinellas County. I mention this only because I read that they have an LPN program with an online option, so you could do the classwork on your own time and only have to worry about attending clinicals in person once a week.

Aside from that... I don't know of any other Tampa night programs; SPC has a program but days only.

Good luck.

No, I haven't finished my prereqs. Tho I did look into HCC and SPC requirements.

I might just do HCC considering they have night classes. Do you know if HCC has any online classes that I can take some prereqs classes in? I was told by someone SPC has some but it is tough to do.

Thank you for your response!! This is very helpful to me in making a big decision in my life. :)

You're welcome, I aim to share all that I can.

Any CC has lots of online prereqs typically, and using this as a guide:

Hillsborough Community College - Curriculum Prerequisites

I'm sure you can find ENC1101, SYG2000, MAC1105 online for sure most definitely.

Meanwhile, A&P 1&2 might be harder to find online but it is possible; I know the CC (South Florida) where I took AP 1 & 2 had them online (didn't take them online though). But, you will also need a Lab section to go with the lecture section. I don't know that an online Lab section exists.

MICRO on the other hand I took online via SPC as a transient (I moved back to Orlando from South Florida, temporary relocation). SPC had Micro lecture AND Micro lab online. For the online Micro lab you actually do experiments at home after you order a $200 Micro kit online for said experiments. I still have the kit and could sell it to you if you wanted for much less than $200.

Anyway though I will say this, HCC prereqs took me only 2 semesters (I had ENC1101 and SYG2000 done from my prior BA though) and I probably could have done them in one, though, at the time last year I was also taking BSN prereqs which is what stretched it into two semesters.

If you are serious about this and hurry, you might be able to slip into Summer B term at HCC and take Anatomy I (if you have a prereq for it already done I assume) in the 6 week term like I did in Summer 2011. Anatomy I is not hard in 6 weeks as long as you are prepared to sacrifice your social life for it. That's just a month though. I mention this only because it would be advantageous in you could do the sequence of AP 1 (Summer B) -> AP 2 (Fall 2012) -> Micro (Spring 2013) and that way you would just make the June 1, 2013 deadline for HCC's Spring 2014 admission. My point though is that that 3 class science chain is the most important and you need to get it started as early as possible.

Alot of imformation here. Thank you so much! I will look into this. I plan to start as soon as I can. I see your point with the chain.. I dont think I will have my prereqs by then, but I am determined. :)

I can't thank you enough. :redbeathe

One thing about PTEC and LPN... something I noticed, they have an online program starting August 20, 2012. Application deadline is 6/14/12 however which is next week. It's 15 months and the way the timing would work you would actually be done with LPN school by the end of 2013 which would have you falling perfectly in line with an LPN-RN transition program start at HCC for January 2014... and then you'd graduate with me from HCC (assuming they take me for Spring 2013, lol) in December 2014 since the transition is one year only I think. (Though during LPN school you may have to take RN prereqs which you wouldn't need to take now if you went this route).

Just wanted to share this tidbit. In short though you have some decisions to make, and quickly: : LPN now or RN prereqs now.

And y/w for the info sharing. I've had countless people tell me I should be an academic advisor, lol.

EDIT: Um, it looks like there was an Admissions Seminar on May 16 for the August class. Since that passed, not sure if they'd still let you apply since you didn't go. *shrug* I dunno. Like I said though you have some research to do! :)

Also for the science chain, HCC *might* let you take AP2 & Micro at the same time. That might be hell though, but possibly necessary if it will help you beat an HCC RN application deadline. You know what classes you need to take though, I don't.

Good luck with ur studies!!!!!

SPC has night programs as well. Their May enrollment is the only day program. January and August admission are both night.

Based on my research, SPC believes 2pm counts as "night." I doubt that's what the OP is looking for, otherwise I would have considered it too.

I did look int o PTec online LPN program. The only problem I have with that are the clinicals. Its once a week for night shift and every other weekends. I would not be able to do the night shift. So I may have to start to my prereqs. I may take some classes at SPC and some at HCC. It may be my only option.

Do you like HCC as far as classes are concern? Are you taking day or night classes?

And yes, you should be an advisor! lol

I hope I can catch up. If not, I'll be right behind you. :)

If night classes start at 2pm, I wouldn't be able to make it. Working 8-5 every day. :(

But thank you for the informartion!

Okay then PTEC is out for you, not to worry. Let the fun of prereqs begin.

I have yet to take any classes at HCC. I am currently living in Orlando at the moment and have a lease here until April 2013. HCC requires 21 hours of prereqs. Here's how I took them:

6 credits (ENC1101 and SYG2000) were already done as part of my AA degree which I got back in 2001, from Broward CC (South Florida)

11 credits I took from Summer 2011-Spring 2012 also at Broward CC. These included AP1 + Lab, (4) AP2 + Lab (4), and MAC1105 (3).

4 credits of Micro + Lab = at SPC online as a Transient. Having an online lab was great.

Had I planned this out better I probably could have made the HCC Fall 2012 deadline, however over the last year I was also taking BSN prereqs too (Psych, Nutrition, Chem, etc) because I was planning on a straight BSN program initially. But that has changed. HCC has become my #1 choice due to their night program... I'm all "student loaned out" and want/need to work my way through ASN school at least.
