I have been an RN for 6 months working in a Family Practice clinic. It was not my first choice as I wanted to go into Med/Surg but there weren't many positions open at the time and I was extremely lucky to be where I am for the time being. However, working in a clinic is not my thing and right now I feel trapped. I have not found my nitch yet and I am wondering how long will it take until I find something that I really feel passionate about. :heartbeat
I am almost two years in the profession but I still haven't found my nitch... It's just that I feel I still haven't learned enough to pursue a specialty...I don't know maybe I'm just plain stupid...
No, you are not stupid. You maybe just comfortable on the unit you are working and just want to learn more prior to a specialty. There is nothing wrong with it. You may have your specialty is the unit you are working.
My niche is L&D, but I've never worked in it. I'm in CVICU, where everyone keeps telling me I'd hate L&D because it's very "crotchy". LOL. Anyway, you'll figure it out, everyone's different.
Ha ha Julie, you are always so funny. Seriously, I guess being "crotchy" would be the thing that would be the deal breaker for L&D now wouldn't it.
I think it depends how long it takes you to find your niche. I always thought L&D was my niche. I loved it in school scored 99% on both my final and midterm without studying, everything made perfect sense and came naturally to me. Out of school however I ended up working med/surg/ortho. I LOVE it. It is never in my wildest dreams what I thought I would want to do with my life, but honestly cant imagine doing anything. In my case had I followed my gut I would have ended up doing something that I dont think I would have got this amount of joy from. I look forward to going to work everyday, well most days anyway, LOL. My best advice, take every opportunity and give it a fair shot. I agree that 6 months is long enough to know when something's not for you. You never know, your niche may just find you. :)

cnl2b,
i wanted to thank you for your response to my post - i have been looking for other job opportunities in the meantime. however, just yesterday i learned from a co-worker who works prn at family practice and for pain and spine, informed me that the supervisor at p&s asked for me. it's a long story but i ended working there sometime ago in april for a day to help out. i had a wonderful time with everyone and the staff was great to work with.
my friend gave the supervisor my name and phone number. in the meantime, i will be polishing my resume and perhaps i can get out my current situation gracefully without stepping on any one's toes. i know for a fact, that my supervior does not like me - she never listens to me or takes time out to speak with me as she does with everyone else in the department. we shall see what happens in the near future....
thanks :)
