RN and MLS part-time

Published

Hi!

This is my first post on the site, so I apologize  if I am in the right section.

I will be completing nursing school pretty soon and I really like it, but I also have a passion for laboratory sciences. My question is, with 36 hours a week working as a nurse, is it doable to follow a part-time second degree in medical laboratory sciences and eventually work part-time on both?

Thanks.

ps. My state has good opportunities for both fields.

Hello,

I also have a passion for lab sciences and nursing.  I'm glad to see you are also interested in both.  I want to continue doing both if possible.  I will be starting an MLT apprenticeship in the Fall and will continue working as a school nurse.  I was told that with several years of experience in the lab I could apply for MLS certification since I already have my BSN or I can get a second Bachelors in MLS.  I've seen online programs for MLT-MLS that are only 11-months long so I'm not sure what I will do when the time comes.  I was told during the interview that they typically don't see nurses changing over to the lab rather than it being the other way around.  They were surprised to see that I was interested in the position.  That is awesome that your state has good opportunities for both fields!  Where I live there is a pay cut for MLT and MLS compared to nurses.  Good luck on your decision.
