RN to LPN to RN

hmmm.... i'll try searching for similar questions. hehe :)

I just graduated as RN (outside America) this year and planning to take NCLEX-RN.

I'm also planning to work as an LPN for a while just to gain more American hospital experience (to add up with 6 months Philippine hospital experience as RN hopefully). Is this possible? Will they change my license from RN to LPN? I hope not... i've heard a lot of people who graduated as RN chose to be an LPN, some move on with RN, and some stay as LPN.

Believe it or not, i didn't get to do a lot of simple procedures back in school, i just learned it from books but didn't really get to perform it. So i want to master them first as an LPN before working as an RN. who knows.. maybe i'll just stay an LPN! Honestly i'm scared to work as an RN in a foreign country, but i think everybody feels this way when they're new right?

Can anybody recommend me a study guide about simple procedures? like... a bunch of cd's showing how to do procedures. i'd really appreciate it. thanks.

Im not sure of the answer to your question but I wanted to suggest checking with local community colleges....many offer a RN refresher course. It targets those who have been out of the nursing field for a long time and lost their skills, but it would be a good place for you to learn them as well. You earned the title of RN, u deserve to maintain that title. Just take a refresher course and also you could sign up for a new grad type internship/externship at a hospital where you want to work. That way you have a lengthy orientation/training and the hospital will teach you how to do procedures the way THEY want you to do them. Im a home health LPN working on my RN, and I worry that I have forgotten many procedures (caths, etc), but many RNs have told me when you go to the hospital they teach you everything anyway. I also hope most of it will come back to me during my RN schooling. Good luck to you!

In response to the original message.....I too recommend taking an RN refresher course. If you live in the Houston area a lot of hospitals such as Memorial Hermann offer them. Wherever you do currently live in the states, check out the major hospitals in the area-they *typically* offer them. GOOD LUCK!

ooh.. thank you very very much! I thought refresher courses don't exist... i don't know any in the philippines, except for the East West Review Center in Manila where they teach simple procedures, but through computer only, not with real patients. It's not really a school.

I might try out the refresher course. :) thanks! i'll look for some in California. But there might be a problem with my visa... i'll just clarify it with the school anyway... thank you...

Hi! I moved your question out of the LPN to RN forum, which is a forum for LPNs who are students to become RNs and your quesiton really doesn't apply to them.

Also in the USA, nurses who are RNs do not work or take positions as LPNs. You said you know of a lot of people that do this, and perhaps they do in the Philippines. buit in the USA I've never heard of one person doing this.

If an RN takes a position that is normally heald by a LPN, and the duties can be done by an LPN, they are still considered an RN.

New grad RNs can get plenty of on-the-job skill training as new grad RNs and don't need to take LPN positions just for the experience of getting hospital skills.

You have to take the NCLEX-PN if you want to work as an LPN here but as an LPN you won't get an immigrant visa only a BSN degree from the Philippines and RN license from the USA can give you that.
