RN in London, Ontario

Published

Hi there,

I am an IEN and thank God that to get the RN license within two years after moving into Canada. However, I found to find a job in Hospital or Government funded senior home is uneasy. I have been invited to attend interview in St. Jos, and VH, but failed....

I have worked for visiting nurse and agency nurse, seems no other options for those IEN can work in facility :(....

Anyone can give me advice on job interview ? and lots of people would say if failed in hospital job interview, you have no more chance to attend any other job interview in the future, is that true ?

Don't lose hope! Did you do any refresher courses? If you did, apply to where you did your clinicals. In BC, many iens are hired at hospitals, so I am sure in Ontario where they are short of RN's you will have better luck. Keep applying and apply far and wide to get your foot in the door

Thank you for your encouraging words, I didn't take any refresher course and I 'd just taken IENCAP, CELBAN , Jurisprudence exam and NCLEX-RN right away.

I even can't find any job shadowing, or refresher course ..or join ONA,.. coz I don't have any job and can't join the union... :( ....

Did you have previous hospital experience in your own country? If you are desperate and can relocate, consider applying to rural areas or other provinces

If your interview at LHSC or St. Joes went poorly , then yes it is possible that HR will block future applications.

Are you willing to relocate, London is a tricky area because they graduate a new class of nurses every year. Vacancies are often filled by new grads who precepted on the unit.

What's your previous nursing experience ?

I have got a job in one LTC now . and the salary is decent (at least they recognised my experience , thank God!) and can work 8 hours day shift , full time and full benefits :)

Oh that means LHSC will block me for future... I have extensive experience in my home country.. I was an educator and as a clinical instructor in a hospital based nursing school. Specialised in Ortho and have represented my home country to attend Canadian Ortho Nurses Asso. in 2010 & 2016... but anyway, i have given up to apply to LHSC ..... i have worked as volunteer as global educator in one US charitable educational institutes and which can maintain my research work and educational role :)

To clarify wasn't saying there's no chance LHSC will hire you but because everything is centralised through HR if they denied your application at this first point, the same thing will keep happening. Glad to hear you got a job in LTC. Because LHSC is unionised it makes it difficult to get in especially full time. What is your home county/ first language?

Just curious, what do you mean by interview went poorly? I am worried now :(

Most interviews have points assigned to each question. The points are added up. Highest score gets the job. See it all the time at work, best qualified often don't do well on interviews. Huge problem.

Also if your spoken English is like your written, interviewers are going to have a hard time understanding and evaluating your answers

I came from Hong Kong and My first language is Cantonese:)
