Hi folks:
I am thinking about moving to L.A or San Francisco area. Which area is better in terms of income compared to the living expenses? Any specific hospitals anyone can recommend? I can work at Med/Surg or Tele dept.
I heard RN's income in Cali is very high, close to six digits. But you pay a lot of state taxes, what percentages of income will go to the state tax there?
Arizona is too boring for me and my family, I will like move to Cali for a change. Thanks for helps!

I live in the Bay Area, and work in Salinas, the pay is very very very good. New RN's start out around 31$ or so. I heard down south by LA or San Diego, they pay about $10 less/hour, the cost of living is the same or higher.
Actually, this is wrong. The wages for new grads are $28/hr down here.

Great dance site !!:balloons:
Lots of good articles, and dance advice.
starting salary for new grad rn's in northern CA, is $38-$42, in the hospitals i've looked at, but yes, the cost of living is very, very, very expensive. average rent for an apt. is about 1,500 or more.
I know SF is in Northern Cali, but it depends where in Northern Cali you mean. You can rent a 3 bedroom house in the Redding area for $1,000-$1,500 a month. I know there salaries are good, and they may still give help with relocation.
I live in the Central Valley, and our new grads start at $31/hr
I just guess it depends on where, who, etc.
Yeah ... you can't generalize, even by area.
In California drive 30 miles in any direction and housing prices, rents as well as hourly pay can change dramatically.
You have to go to the specific area and check out everything first hand. Prices and pay can vary widely.

Actually, the cost of living is not the same or higher. SoCal is expensive, but still cheaper than Northern California.
For example, the average cost of a house in the Bay Area is $628,000. The average cost of a SoCal house is $485,000.
So ... that's $143,000 cheaper per house, on average which, depending on what kind of mortgage you have, can easily add $1,000 more to your monthly payment when you include the extra property taxes and insurance due to higher home values, etc.
In some cases, you can make less money but still bank more if the cost of living is cheaper. It all depends on what specific area you're talking about.

New grads start about $40 in the South SF Bay area. Not including shift or weekend differential. I have never heard that California was known for high state taxes. I have heard that about Taxachuesetts(Massachusetts). I have heard that Northern Cal has the highest salaries for nurses in the country.
The biggest issue is cost of housing whether it be rent or buying a home. Cost to buy a home is very very high. In my middle of the road neighborhood the cheapest home on the multiple listing right now is $649,000 for a 1060 square foot 52 year old house. If you aren't interested in buying the rents are high but manageable.
