RN was fired because the patient didn't like her

One of the new nurses that got hired at the LTC when I did has been fired. The other 2 nurses that got hired when I did quit after 1 week. The RN was very nice. There is one patient at the place that seems to have a lot of power and influence with the bigwigs. I heard that if that patient doesn't like a nurse that they will get rid of the nurse. I was told that they can't find any nurses to stay working on that wing because the patient is so obnoxious and demanding. Apparently, this patient didn't like this nurse and reported her to the bigwigs.

Yes, it is a crazy situation. My biggest fear is that they might try to put me on her wing since no nurse can stand to work that wing because of her. All the nurses dread working on that wing because they all know that if that patient doesn't like them that their job is in jeopardy.

There is a resident at the last place I worked who has that type of influence. She demanded that they put me on her wing because she wanted me to be "her nurse." She is on the long term care side. I figure if I had been assigned to the LTC side she probably would've gotten made at me for something eventually lol!

I was let go after 3 days of orientation because I was going to be put on the rehab side with 30 post-op, alert and oriented demanding patients and after three whole days wasn't fast enough giving meds. to everyone I had been an office nurse for years so was rusty and they knew it. It is so sad to see the direction LTC homes are going in these days

Anyone ever teach you all how Chinese telephone works? Just a caution that everything that gets passed thru your coworkers is not necessarily the truth. There have also been times that I have had to fire the "nicest" nurse but for other justifiable reasons - such as attendance, or consistently dangerous practice or the inability to document despite repeated attempts at education (resulting in dangerous med errors)

Now, with that said, there really are some very difficult residents. As my very first boss taught me, "Kill them with kindness". All interactions should be friendly but to the point. Ask a witness to join you if you truly worry about stories being twisted. And, last but not least, document, document, document.

As always, Nascar Nurse gives excellent advice. Don't believe everything you hear, and always take another person with you if the resident is difficult.

I have been on that wing only once with another nurse orientating me when I was on medication orientation.That patient was very demanding with the nurse orientating me and demanded a lot of that other nurse's time. Staff had told me that my best bet was to always agree with whatever she says and to just keep repeating "Yes Ma'am". Unfortunately, she asked me for her pain medication. I told her "Yes, Ma'am

Let me check your medication record for the orders on your pain pills". She got upset with me and angrily said

"No, you do not need to check anything like that. My doctor told me that I could have my pain pills whenever I wanted them". I said "I'm sorry Ma'am but I do have to check first." Anyway, it was too early for her narcotic pain pills so I told her that I would have to wait until it was time. I don't think she liked that at all but I guess she didn't report me because I was right and she knew it.
