Rio Hondo Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

This is a thread for Fall 2018 future ADN students at Rio Hondo. Share experiences, stats, or general questions before application opens/closes.

I did not attend an info. session :/ however, on the actual ADN application that we turned in, it has the Life Experiences listed A-G (on pg 2) and in parenthesis it says "may check up to five areas"..?

Either or, if I can only get a max of 3, then I guess they can just pick the 3 that they want lol

Also! I noticed that Rio wanted more documentation for the Life Exp. section. For Santa Ana, we only needed documentation for "Refugee/Veteran status" and "Low Family Income", they didn't require anything like docs or letters for the "1st Gen. College Student". I didn't have time to gather that info for Rio's app, so I just submitted the Life Experiences paperwork the same way I did for Santa Ana. Oops lol

Oh okay... I think that I just remembered.

In the info. session they said that it used to be up to 5 but they also counted the foreign language as part of that. But now they split it, so max is 3 in the life experiences and im guessing the foreign language is 2. In the yellow sheet it says to just check up to 3 life experiences. For example, the need to work you need a letter from the employer or a pay stub with explanation.

If you submitted 5 then thats great! It doesn't hurt to put more lol

If you have a degree, it counts as extra plus for points.

The teas gives you (5-20) depending on score.

The science GPA gives (1-10)

A license or certificate in health care (EMT, CNA, MA... ect.) gives you points. (I don't know how many)

Verification of work or volunteer experience in health care gives you points. (I don't know how many)

The life experiences is up to 3 points.

So im assuming that the foreign language gives 2 points. (letter or pay stub indicating bilingual pay)

I believe thats it for points.

OMG! The "Need to Work" documentation is odd lol

I wonder why giving them a pay stub or letter from my employer, 'proves' that I need to work during the program...?!? What does that even prove?

That would imply that my employer knows my personal expenses/budget/financial situation..?

For SA's program, they just wanted a letter/statement about why I need to work during the program (not any personal/specific info) and if/why I worked while taking my nursing pre reqs.

The only proof of work letter I needed (& also turned in to Rio) was the letter from my employer stating my job duties and total amount of hours I've worked.

I also submitted a copy of my EMT certificate to Rio, but nothing like pay stubs or a letter from my work about why I need to work :/

lol dang, I should've went to an info session!

This is the first time I've seen a semi-breakdown of the points for each criteria

Hmm I don't think the employer has to know why you have to work. I think that as long as they write a letter saying that you worked within the timeframe that you took the pre reqs. it should be fine. So I think that you should be fine.

For example, the counselor said that you can't just say that you worked. They must provide a letter from an employer so you're fine.

Or you can't say that you are first generation student. You must get a letter from EOPS/Upward Bound, HS counselor, teacher, clergy, doctor. (someone has to say that you're a first generation).

For the low income, it says, " Low family income (Financial Aid, fee waiver, summary page of tax return, aid from the state).

For the EMT, you should get the points for the certificate. Im assuming that you should also get points if you worked as an EMT for experience.

Everything needs "proof" except the Disadvantage Social or Educational environment and difficult personal/family situations or circumstances (you just need to write a personal statement for those two).

I got this info in a session 🙂

Anyone can correct me if i'm wrong lol

I don't think anyone else is up hahaha

Yea, that sounds right.

I provided proof for the Low Income, and kindaaa on the Need to Work (cert & work letter), but I don't know if they'll take it.

If they do only take 2 Life Exp.'s (the ones that don't need proof), then they should take 2 of my statements.

What about the Disabilities proof?

I know the disability had to fall under a certain insurance code, but I never saw anything pertaining to documentation to provide them with.

I've been to the information session but it was a while back. Would you mind sharing the yellow sheet with me? Thank you.

Hi everyone,

I'm applying for Fall 2018 Rio Hondo Nursing program. I turned in my application a week ago.

My stats are:

Bachelor's of Science in Kinesiology and minor in Biology

TEAS 79% (first try) and 86% (second try) --they only want the first.

200+ hours of hospital internship

Science GPA: 3.77

Overall GPA: 3.8

Life experience (2): need to work & personal/ family difficulty

Not sure how the points are given-- Does anyone know?

I'm nervous, but good luck to everyone applying!

I still think you are a strong candidate just with what you have.

For the disabilities it says, "Disabilities (Section 2626 of the unemployment insurance code or services received from DSPS)

Don't stress about it... You have work experience, EMT certificate, the life experiences and a degree. Plus you have a 4.0 so you're better off than me lol

I've been to the information session but it was a while back. Would you mind sharing the yellow sheet with me? Thank you.

I attended the info session on November or December I believe. I tried posting a picture of the yellow sheet but it doesn't let me.

I can try to send a PM here or email?

Does anyone know when Rio sends out their acceptance/denial letters?

Does anyone know when Rio sends out their acceptance/denial letters?

When I turned in my application the lady said April but she did not specify a date.

Ok thank you, I got the same response. I just didn't know if someone knew around a specific date.
