Rio Hondo Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

This is a thread for Fall 2018 future ADN students at Rio Hondo. Share experiences, stats, or general questions before application opens/closes.

Hey guys! I just dropped off my application this morning!

My stats:

- AA-T degree (so all GE's are done)

- 4.0 science GPA

- estimated 3.2 cumulative GPA (avg. from 3 colleges)

- 1000+ hrs of work as an EMT (still active EMT)

- 74.7 TEAS (1st attempt)

- 5 Life Experiences

I know they use this info. for their multicriteria selection, but I'm not too sure how they score everything or how much weight each category holds.

From past forums, it seems like they put a lot of weight of your science GPA, healthcare experience, degrees, and maybe even foreign language/s..?

Did any of you apply to other programs as well?

Best of luck to everyone! :)

Awesome! I applied to CSULA-BSN program, RIO, and Citrus ADN program. You are definitely a strong candidate! :)

jsanchez6 I think I saw you on the Cerritos College forum. I applied there too.

Not a fan of their 100% lottery system, I don't have the best luck. (I never win scratchers or raffles lol)

I applied since I currently go there, and it was a fairly easy process.

Good luck!

Im sure you will get accepted at Rio so won't need any luck there.

Yeah, im also there. I applied last year there but I was unlucky just like you. But hey, who knows maybe you win the jackpot this year lol

I did most of my courses at Cerritos and I actually asked Mr. Aguayo to write the first generation letter for Rio.

I think we all deserve a spot.

Thank you! I applied to CSULB & CSULA originally, but I didn't do well enough on my TEAS, so I pulled my Cal State apps :/ Good luck to you though, wishing you the best!

So far I've applied to LA County SON, Santa Ana College, Rio Hondo, Cerritos, and I'm going to LBCC tomorrow or thurs to apply.

I agree! Which school, if any, would be your top choice?

I would like to get accepted at Cerritos just because I did most of my classes there. But, I think that I would pick either LBCC or Rio just because their NCLEX pass rate always stays consistent in the 90%.

Cerritos was my top choice too, only because it's so close to me and kinda like you said, we are use to the environment because we took our science courses there.

But I've heard from a couple people (don't know how true this is, as I haven't researched myself), that their NCLEX pass rate isn't too solid. Maybe because of the 100% lottery system?

If that is true, that might sway my decision.

Assuming that I'll have a decision to make lol lets hope.

UPDATE:

I went on the BRN website to check for myself, & their NCLEX pass rate improved A LOT!

Cerritos College - 2015/2016: 78% to 2016/2017: 92.41%

I feel better now, but now I'll be even more sad if I don't get in lol

Stats:

- 3.3 science GPA

- My cumulative gpa is around 3.5

- 160 + hours as a volunteer (actively volunteering now)

- 74.7 TEAS

I don't think I have much chance of getting in this fall but I am taking a chance anyway. I am having trouble with my life experience letter. Can I write about my volunteer experience? How long does the letter have to be?

Hey! So they have 5-6 Life experience topics, & you can claim a maximum of 5. It says to write a letter about why/how each applies to you. (1st generation college student, disabilities, Need to work, etc.)

Not sure how everyone else did it, but I reused my statements that I made for my Santa Ana nursing application (they were the same topics as Rio Hondo's).

- So, mine weren't necessarily "letters", even though it says to write a letter for each. Mine were more like statements as to why each category that I picked applies to me personally, how each affects me or has affected me in my journey to nursing school, the obstacles I've had to overcome because of them, and the qualities I gained from each experience.

- I separated each individual statement w/ a bolded title, so they know which specific ones I'm writing about. Each statement was about half a page. (1.5 spaced)

- For some of the categories, you need to proper provide proof/documentation.

Ex. For "Low Family Income", you need to provide proof of BOGG waiver, Pell grant, or FAFSA EFC/letter, etc. (at least 1)

Hope this helped a bit! Good luck

I mean a 78% is still not that bad, I guess its decent. I just hope to be one of those 78% that pass at Cerritos lol

But yeah, thats assuming we got a spot in all and had to choose!! lol

I do think that the lottery system has something to do with it.

Did you attend an information session? I believe that the counselor said that the most we can submit is 3 life experiences. That the letter of first generation had to be written by someone else. I don't think you can write your "own".

But I could be wrong.

I do have the yellow sheet she handed at the meeting stating the possible points you may accumulate. I don't think I can post it here, but if you want to see it, I can send it to you.

I did not attend an info. session :/ however, on the actual ADN application that we turned in, it has the Life Experiences listed A-G (on pg 2) and in parenthesis it says "may check up to five areas"..?

Either or, if I can only get a max of 3, then I guess they can just pick the 3 that they want lol

Also! I noticed that Rio wanted more documentation for the Life Exp. section. For Santa Ana, we only needed documentation for "Refugee/Veteran status" and "Low Family Income", they didn't require anything like docs or letters for the "1st Gen. College Student". I didn't have time to gather that info for Rio's app, so I just submitted the Life Experiences paperwork the same way I did for Santa Ana. Oops lol
