Rio Hondo Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

This is a thread for Fall 2018 future ADN students at Rio Hondo. Share experiences, stats, or general questions before application opens/closes.

Oh yeah .. my coworker mentioned to me that they have a list of contacts of those who were previously in and those who are in the program.. so they only answer those calls. Whenever she calls they answer promptly and greet her by name. That was interesting to find out because before I received my letter I wouldn't get an answer as well

If that's true, I don't want to bash them, but it seems very unprofessional to purposely ignore student's phone calls, especially if they have questions about their department. I had to call them 4 times in January just to schedule an appointment for the TEAS. When i went to turn in my application, the lady said that I should either hear back in an email or a letter depending on the outcome. I wish they would at the very minimum respond with an email. Another college that I applied to did just that, they sent a mailed and an email form, just to be sure that I received my status. I guess I didn't make it because I am not receiving a call. I'm going to better myself and start earning experience either way. I think that's the only thing holding me back now.

Agreed, I wonder how many others have not yet heard back? NOT BASHING AS WELL... but at least notify us if we got in or not because we need to plan out our futures based on things of this nature.

After more than a week of people posting that they received a letter and got accepted, I finally called today to see what was going on. I was told upon application that we would either receive a letter if accepted or an email if denied. I received neither so I called today. The woman on the phone said that those who were chosen were already sent a lettet. So she looked up my information and said that I was eligible but not accepted. Ok, thanks. A couple hours later I received an email from Rio Hondo stating that I didn't get in. The email was dated April 10 yet I received it April 20. This was my last time applying there. They do not have their **** together.

Hello, anairb, EMT-B,

I just wonder what is 5 Life experiences ? if you dont mind

Guys check your emails, I just got provisionally accepted as an alternate. I'm not sure how high my chances are of getting officially accepted but I am hopeful. :)

Was this your first time applying for programs??

Yes it is. I'm still waiting for Mt. Sac's program to email us back in May. I scored pretty high on their point system. Thanks for the encouragement!

Hello, anairb, EMT-B,

I just wonder what is 5 Life experiences ? if you dont mind

Rio Hondo, & some other schools, use "5 Life Experiences" as a category in their point system when selecting their nursing students.

A few of the common scenarios that an applicant may have experienced (or is still experiencing) in their life:

-Being a first generation college student.

-Needing to work while attending school and/or the program.

-Having a disability.

-Difficult personal or family circumstances.

-Disadvantaged social or educational environment.

If an applicant has experienced one or all of these scenarios while on their journey to nursing school, they must write a statement about it and provide proper documentation to prove it. The school then gives the applicant points for each life experience.

Hope this answered your question!

I have a question! For spanish as a foreign language, how did you submit proof of proficiency?

Hey guys! I'm currently enrolled in ADN151 and the lab and I was wondering if I could message any of you guys for advice / ask some questions?

Is anyone here planning on getting any certifications before nursing school? I’m a phlebotomist, but was also thinking I’d certify for ecg/ekg or pharmacy tech to familiarize with other parts of the field that are relevant. Maybe an ACLS cert as well.

Does anyone know if nurses (bsn/msn) should know billing codes? I know nurses/drs can bill for diff things and before/after makes a diff depending on insurance plans.

I just want to be as well rounded as possible to hopefully score a student nursing gig. I’d like to specialize and earn an MSN as well. Maybe a dr in nursing to become a nurse anesthetist. I’m in my mid 30s so I suppose I don’t have much time to acrue and pay off debt so we’ll see.

This wait is killing me. I applied to several schools.
